Question

How choosing the right Color profile

I use a Canon Printer MG5450. When printing through Lightroom and choosing the appropriate colour profile, LrC proposes a choice between Canon MG 5400 series GL2 or GL3 or MP2 or PT1 and many others. Does anyone know which profile I should use? Canon does not provide the information neither the printing driver. Thank you

I still own a MG6250 and in addition to what Conrad already posted I add my findings here:

Each alphabet pair represents its respective Media type.
PR = Photo Paper Pro and Photo Paper Pro II
SP = Photo Paper Plus Glossy
MP = Matte Photo Paper
SG = Photo Paper Plus Semi-gloss
GL = Photo Paper Plus Glossy II
PT = Photo Paper Pro Platinum

I also add a very old pdf exlaining some things. Though old, the basics are still true.

And some notes I found on the web some time ago:

Your Canon printer may have profiles with slightly different names, but just remember that the description includes the printer model followed by the

paper type (
PR = Photo Paper Pro,
MP = Matte Photo Paper, and
SP = Photo Paper Plus Glossy),

and finally the quality setting at the end (1, 2, 3, etc., Custom Print quality setting !!).

Using the profile description (visible in your photo editor or printing software in the profile selection dialog), you should be able to choose the right profile for your printer and Canon paper.

- Set te correct paper setting acc. the appropriate profile
- Set the custom Print quality to the needed setting acc. the appropriate profile
- Select Diffusion
- Turn ICM in the Printer driver off (uncheck)
- Set all correction sliders to 0 / center
- turn all effects off (uncheck)

-> select the appropriate profile for printing in the application used

I experienced quite good printing results with the help of these guides.

I do not have that model of Canon printer, but it’s common to have those abbreviations (GL2, PT1…) to refer to different paper types. Even though I don’t own that printer, I downloaded the User Guide for it from the printer’s Support page on the Canon website. It contains the page below.

Looking at the help page, my guess is that the abbreviations map to the media types listed there. For example, GL2 might be Photo Paper Plus Glossy II <PP-201>, and PT probably means Photo Paper Pro Platinum <PT-101>.

If you do not want to risk guessing, then instead of choosing a profile, in Lightroom Classic choose Managed by Printer instead, but then make sure to click the Printer button so that you can use the Canon printer driver options to select an appropriate media type. There is a good chance that the Canon printer driver automatically applies the correct profile when you choose an appropriate media type in the Canon printer driver, because that is how the Managed by Printer workflow generally works.

You might get a more definitive answer if you can find an online forum focused on Canon photo printers.

Many thanks for this valuable information Conrad C. Unfortunately, printing through the Canon driver is no option. My printer is rather old and the driver does not allow to get the colours quality provided by LrC. I will also check directly with Canon as suggested and with the paper company. Have a nice day. Yky
