Question

How do I get LR to display both the image and video when both share the same name?

I'm hoping someone can provide some insight into this. I have many instances where a video file and corresponding image file share the same name, but for some reason, LR on import has chosen to not display both, but to simply show one, and in grid view, indicate that the other file exists by adding something like, in the case of the attached screenshot, "MOV+JPEG". In this case, this was a "live photo" as apple calls it, taken with an iphone. I used Image Capture to ingest my iphone camera roll into my computer, which left me with a photo file (.JPG) and a video file (.MOV) of the same name. I'd like for LR to just show me both thumbnails in grid view.

Can anyone help? Thank you.

LR treats a JPEG with the same name as a video as a "sidecar" of the video, similar to the .xmp sidecar that LR creates for raws. Years ago, some cameras would produce JPEGs accompanying videos that contained important metadata. I don't know if they still do.

You can get LR to separate the .MOV and the .JPG by checking the misleadingly named option Preferences > General > Treat JPEG Files Next To Raw Files As Separate Photos. Then remove the video from the catalog and reimport it.
