How does saving to .xmp work with images synced from cloud?

I normally do my work in Lightroom Desktop and sync images and their edits to the cloud.  My entire workflow starts in Lightroom (either desktop or mobile).  I load images to the cloud, then later I'll open Lightroom Classic and download everything I've done so I have a local copy/backup of my images.  I never start in Classic and sync smart previews to the cloud.

Sometimes I need to use LrC, for soft-proofing for example.  If I have LrC set to save .xmps, when it downloads an image or the edits I've done to an image, what does it do?  Will it then create the .xmp and save it next to the raw that it downloads from the cloud?

It's supposed to.  But the option Automatically Write Changes Into XMP has gotten flakier in the last couple of years. More importantly, there's a very serious performance bug when the option is used in conjunction with Denoise:

So until that's fixed, I recommend turning off the option (I have). We'll see if the bug gets fixed next week in LR 15.
