How to change a white b/ground behind a subject to another colour

Hi, Please can someone help? I am trying to change a white background behind a subject to another colour. I have created a mask, selected the subject, inverted it, but when I try to use the hue slider or the colour box, the mask won't change. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Really a job for Photoshop!

It would be easier in Photoshop, but it can definitely be done in Lightroom too.

The hue slider changes color, but white is not a color, so changing the hue slider will not affect white. Try the Temperature and/or Tint sliders, combined with a negative Exposure.
