Question

I can not open Lightroom Catalog which is in OneDrive.

Today I opened my Lightroom Classic (Windows), as usual, and surprise...the catalog is nor recognized or not found.

The message is something like "any pictures have been selected". Lightroom opens but it shows empty menus and not picture at all.

I have tried to open the catalog from its location, and nothing happens

I am pretty sure that it's something related to OneDrive and its cloud storage

I have done all the things recommended but now I don´t know what to do...just wait if it solves itself.

Anyone with the same problem?

Thanks.

Thanks to all of you for your answers.

I was finally able to retrieve the latest backup and install the catalog again out of OneDrive (in my hard drive).

The catalog was there (in OneDrive) because when I changed Lightroom to my new computer, it was installed there. I was aware of the risks, but I never changed it.

Lesson learned !!

A Lightroom-Classic catalog cannot be stored in any form of Cloud or Network (including OneDrive).

Copy the Catalog, out of OneDrive, to a local folder of your PC, and [Double-click] it to open.

(Backups to any Cloud storage is another topic.)

I believe there is a common misunderstanding here. Many cloud services will sync a local folder with the cloud, although some also have special options not to store a local copy. If you use such a cloud service and do use the default method that syncs a local folder, then a Lightroom catalog can be stored in that folder because it will still be a local copy. People have done this with Dropbox for years.

Whether this is still a good idea is another question. Dropbox recently had to relocate its local folder due to changes in MacOS Ventura, and that seems to cause all kinds of problems. I would definitely advise against using Dropbox for syncing a catalog on a Mac! OneDrive is also often coming up in problems with catalogs stored in its folder. So my advice is not to use this either, but as long as you understand the differences between syncing a local folder and keeping everything online only, one cannot say it's impossible. It's possible, but probably not advisable.

I think, someone with the skill set, should post a feature post about LrC vs One Drive. One issue I notice now that I have moved to Windows 11, is MS heavy heavy One Drive enabling, users may be getting fouled up by this. Personally, I forced a local Windows user account, just to keep all that MS account, and One Drive heavy handness away from me.
