Question

?: I have a question regarding Duplicate photos

Hello,

Ive been looking around and cant seem to find an answer to my question and was hoping you may be able to help me.

Im new to Lightroom and am trying to clean up my folders and images. I have a number of folder structures that are redundant and Im not sure how to handle them.

For example, lets say I have 4 images, A,B,C and D  in Folder X

If I have Folder Y as a sub folder of X and Folder Y has images A and B in it, is there any way I can delete Folder Y and its contents without affecting Folder X?

In other words, I would like images A and B to remain in my Lightroom Catalog (in Folder X) but I just don't want them to be duplicated in another folder (Folder Y) and would just like to end up with Folder X containing images A,B,C and D.

I hope this makes sense and I appreciate your help and expertise very much.

Best to you and hope to hear from you,

Rick

Thank you so much Ian Lyons, dj_paige and WobertC. I really appreciate your help!

Ok, Ive made the change in the Library and now it is displayed how I like. Thank you very much!!

Now, if I delete a sub folder which has "0" images in it, would that affect another sub folder that does have images in it?

In other words,

Lets say I have Folder X with 0 images and have Sub Folder Y with 0 images and Sub Folder Z with 11 images with Folder X in first position, Y in second position and Z in third position. If I delete Folder Y, will that leave all 11 images in Folder Z in tact and just move Folder Z into 2nd position while eliminating Folder Y?

Thank you again for all of your input and expertise!

best to you all,

Rick

If you have photos in sub-folders of an 'empty' parent folder, and "Remove" the parent folder, then YES, Lightroom WILL remove ALL the photos in sub-folders from the Catalog.

eg. If I try to Remove my {NUMBERS} folder (with zero photos)

I see a warning message-

To 'elevate' photos from sub-folders up to empty parent folders you would need to "Move" the photos by Drag&Drop in the Folders panel, and then you could remove the empty sub-folders.

Okay greyhoundrick, please clarify this

For example, lets say I have 4 images, A,B,C and D  in Folder X

If I have Folder Y as a sub folder of X and Folder Y has images A and B in it, is there any way I can delete Folder Y and its contents without affecting Folder X?

In other words, I would like images A and B to remain in my Lightroom Catalog (in Folder X) but I just don't want them to be duplicated in another folder (Folder Y) and would just like to end up with Folder X containing images A,B,C and D.

Are you looking in your operating system when you see these duplicates, or are you looking in Lightroom? Or both? Or neither?

Agree with Ian Lyons as above. This option  [Show Photos in Subfolders]  has tricked many!

A)  If you see this-

Your folders in Lr will look like this-

BUT-  The {NUMBERS} folder does NOT contain any images.  Lightroom is just 'Showing' all the photos that are in all three folders.

B)  If your option is this-

Your folders in Lr will look like this-

And when selecting a folder, the photos you see in the Grid view will also change with the option setting.

eg. With Option B)  selecting the {NUMBERS} folder, you would see this in the Grid window-

If these are actual true duplicates in your operating system, you have to figure out which has been imported into the Lightroom, the "original" in Folder X or the "duplicate" in Folder Y.

So, find the photo in Lightroom, right-click and select (Windows) Show in Explorer or (Mac) Show in Finder. This will tell you what folder the photo is stored in that has been imported.

Once you know the answer, then the next step can be determined. So, which is it? Is it consistent across all of your photos, or not consistent?

Let us know.

Lightroom Classic doesn't allow duplicates. Therefore, if you have any, the application will prevent you from moving them. Also, make sure that you uncheck the Library menu option Library > Show Photos in Subfolders. Doing so will ensure that you'll be able to see exactly which subfolder each photo is in.
