Question

I uploaded a memory card into LIghtroom. I tried to select the background mask option, and LR immeciately shut down twice in a row. I checked updates and also restarted my computer. Happened a 3rd time.

Lightroom Classic is crashing when trying to select the background mask tool.

    Hi Christine,

Sorry to hear Lightroom Classic keeps shutting down on you. Since the crash happens the moment you select the Background mask, a good place to start is Adobe’s official troubleshooting guide for graphics processor (GPU) and graphics driver issues in Lightroom Classic — crashes and freezes are among the symptoms it covers. Here are its steps, in order:

    1. Turn the GPU off to test: In Lightroom Classic, open Preferences > Performance, uncheck Use Graphics Processor, restart Lightroom Classic, and try selecting the Background mask again. (If a crash prevents changing preferences, the guide also explains how to disable the graphics processor by editing the preferences file manually.)
    2. 2. Force DirectX (Windows): If you are on Windows, delete the Camera Raw GPU Config.txt file as described in the guide, then relaunch Lightroom Classic so it uses DirectX, and test again.
    3. 3. Update the graphics driver: Install the latest driver from the graphics card manufacturer’s own website (rather than through Windows Update or Device Manager), performing a clean installation, and disable any third-party GPU overclocking or optimization utilities.
    4. 4. Turn Use Graphics Processor back on in Preferences > Performance, restart Lightroom Classic, and confirm whether selecting the Background mask still causes a crash.

If it still crashes after the driver update with the GPU re-enabled, reply back with your operating system, your graphics card model, and whether step 1 changed anything — that will help narrow down the next steps.
