I want to rock and roll with Lightroom 6

I finally upgraded from Photoshop Elements to Lightroom.  My computer is too old for LR to work reasonably.  I am going to buy a new computer with the goal of great Lightroom performance.  I don't want to know the minimu system requirements - I have those.  I want to know the system requirements for truly excellent overall Lightroom performance.  I want to spend my time working on my photos, not waiting for my computer to catch up.  I want to get what I really need and not be disappointed that I saved a few bucks in a year or so.  Thanks!  Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

- I am looking to buy a windows based system

- I live in the USA

- Portable or desktop – I am looking to buy a new machine for what works best. If this is not a big deal, my preference is mobile-laptop. If that makes a >$300 price difference, desk top is OK.

- Integrated display – for a desktop this is OK with me.

- I currently do not use any system intensive or heavy apps – not a gamer, just a photographer.

- I am an experienced hobbyist level photographer. My thing is travel photography, I just took 4500 raw images in Myanmar. I hope to process in Lightroom about 10K per year.

- No strong preference on monitor – Looking for a recommendation on what I should get.

- My primary camera at this point is Nikon D5600, which is 25.6 megapixels. However, I am looking to upgrade to a full frame Nikon or Cannon to properly do astrophotography.

Thanks again for helping a developing photographer to the next level!

Do not buy a system with a CPU that has than 4 physical cores. LR has a problem with systems that have more that 4 physical cores.

Yes you can limit the number of cores LR uses but why bother. Just buy a system with a CPU that has 4 cores.

It's not so black and white. Only some LR users with more than 4 core CPUs are affected, and Adobe is working on the specific issues. One shouldn't let a short term problem drive a long term decision.

Adobe working on it won't help someone like the original poster who wants to use Lightroom 6.

It would help people to advise you sensibly, if you mentioned:

  • Mac or Windows operating system?
  • Which country you live in? (since this is a worldwide forum)
  • Any physical requirements - portable? do you want an integrated display?
  • Approximate budget range for PC and also for display
  • Any other heavy requirements for the same PC - such as gaming, 3D work, video editing.

When you talk about performance: how intensive is your usage likely to be which stresses that performance, and of what sort?

IOW - are you a busy studio needing to quick-turnaround a few thousand event shots or school portraits per day - are you a hobbyist artistically polishing just a few thousand landscapes per year - or, whereabouts in between?

Also tell us what size monitor you want in pixels (do not tell us inches).

Also tell us what size images your camera takes in megapixels (do not tell us megabytes).

One of the problems with Lightroom 6 (and earlier editions) is that they do not perform well (for some people) if you purchase a CPU that has more than 4 cores, and those are getting hard to find.
