iMac shuts down while removing noise from Sony Raw files

This has happened to me about a dozen times now over a couple months...  

 

I'll be running Denoise from the Develop module, the computer will get maybe halfway into it, then just shut down.  No warning or anything, just shuts down.  When it restarts it doesnt even give me that "your computer shut down due to an error" message or anything.  

 

Running 2017 iMac, Radeon Pro 580 GB GPU, 40 MB ram, Ventura 13.6.3.  Lightroom Classic 13.2  Sony A7R4 ARW Raw files.

 

Anyone else have this?

    So I swapped out the HDD for an SSD.  While in there I vacuuumed out the fan and vents, though they fan was pretty clean to be honest.  I also applied new thermal paste to the CPU and GPU and new thermal pads to the video ram.  Istalled a clean system before restoring from Time Machine.  I just batch de-noised 7 files in a raw without crashing.  So who knows.. maybe it was the heat?  Maybe a fresh OS did it?  Anyway its working for now, fingers crossed!

      I still suspect it was the heat build-up. Based on your description that it happened when doing lots of computationally intensive tasks, that is the most likely suspect. It is hard for me to see how the OS had anything to do with it.

      So I just denoised a few photos while monitoring the temperature, and the temp mostly stayed around 75°c with a few spikes up to 95°, it shut down on one of those 95° spikes.  I was planning on replacing the internal HDD with an SDD anyway, which requires cracking the whole thing open.  May vaccum out the fans and vents while I'm in there and see if that fixes it...

        "May"? You mean you may or may not? You should DEFINITELY vaccuum out the case and vents.

        Yes, that sounds very much like overheating.

         

        Checking on my own system, Denoise takes the GPU temperature up from 40° to around 70°. That's on a tower system with good ventilation and no dust on the fans (new GPU) - but there is clearly considerable heat buildup during Denoise. I can hear the fans spinning up quite a bit.

        There are free utilities for monitoring your computer's temperature (Google it -- Intel no longer distributes theirs).  If you still have an issue after cleaning the vents, then run the utility while using LR.

        Computer shutting down is almost alwas a hardware malfunction or a bad GPU driver. When performing computationally intensive tasks such as Denoise, the cooling system may not be able to dissipate heat quickly enough and shut down happens. Vaccuum out the iMac case and all air vents. Make sure all internal fans are operating correctly.
