Question

Image rotation super glitchy

This is a problem I've experienced with LR classic for a number of years now - it's small enough to not be detrimental to my workflow, but is consistent and annoying.

This occurs around 50% of the time - after I have appeared to succesfully rotate an image (by 90º, for instance), it will then jump back to its original orientation. However, when I press the rotation key again, it will rotate by an extra 90º, so 180º in total. This leads me to believe that my first attempt at rotating the image was actually successful, but that LR simply wasn't displaying the change that I had made.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I don't recall seeing similar symptoms posted here before.

"This leads me to believe that my first attempt at rotating the image was actually successful, but that LR simply wasn't displaying the change that I had made."

A couple of steps to test this:

1, After applying the rotation, open the photo in Loupe view (type "e") and zoom to 100%. When you go back to Grid view, is the thumbnail properly rotated?

2. After applying the rotation, do Library > Previews > Build 1:1 Previews.  Does the rotation stick?

I just tried both suggestions, but neither had an impact on the rotation of any images. I did however quit and reopen LR after experiencing the issue, which allowed the rotation to be completed - I think this confirms my suspicion that LR saves the rotation data but sometimes fails to display the updated image.

Any ideas on how this can be fixed? As I said, I've experienced it for the past three years or so, so it isn't associated with a particular version of LR.

"I think this confirms my suspicion that LR saves the rotation data but sometimes fails to display the updated image."

There have been many infrequent reports over the years of LR failing to update grid view in a timely manner.  Unfortunately, without a precise step-by-step for reproducing the problem on multiple machines, Adobe won't take any action on a bug report (unless many people report the same symptoms on the same version).

You could try these generic troubleshooting steps:

1. In Preferences/Settings > Performance, hold down Opt and uncheck the magically appearing setting Use GPU To Apply Dehaze And Clarity Adjustments While Generating Previews.  LR has been using the GPU for generating Library previews for quite a while now, and this option purports to control part of that process.  Maybe the GPU is glitching with your images when generating previews.  And maybe this option controls more than just images with Dehaze and Clarity (it's not unheard of for LR options to be misleadingly named).

2. If that doesn't change things, try temporarily setting Preferences/Settings > Performance > Use Graphics Processor to Off. That could also narrow down the issue to the graphics processor.  On Mac, the only way to update the graphics driver is by upgrading to the newest version of Mac OS (which version are you on?).

3. Try resetting LR's preferences:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior. That article explains how to restore the old preferences if resetting doesn't help.

The preferences file is preserved intact across LR upgrades, so it might be that a corruption crept in several years ago.

4. Try creating a new test catalog and importing the same photos into it.  Does the problem still occur?  If not, that would suggest some data problem specific to your current catalog, and we could provide steps that would transfer all your catalog contents to a new catalog (a process that sometimes fixes catalog-specific issues).
