Question

image time stamp vs file numbering

Version 12.0.1

Desktop LrC Microsoft 10

When I download images under "Capture time" they appear in sequence, but the file "numbering" is not in sequence. An example - image time stamp of 05:02.54 image file number is 46; the next image time stamp of 05:04:xx has a image file number of 200. What causes this, and how can it be corrected?

Thanks, GJ

Are you renaming the files with sequential numbering on Import? Assuming so:

LR imports photos out-of-order compared to the order shown in the Import window, and the sequential renumbering is based on the actual import order.  It wouldn't have been hard for LR to renumber based on the order displayed in the Import window, but that's not how Adobe implemented it.  (Lots of complaints about it over the years.)

Some workarounds to get renamed file names that sort alphanumerically the same as the capture date/time:

1. Use the "Filename number suffix" renaming token to preserve the original number assigned by the camera (which typically wraps around from 9999 to 0001 every 9999 photos).

2. Use date-and-time in the renaming instead of sequential numbering. But that won't work with bursts of photos taken in the same second, since the LR file renaming won't insert fractional seconds. (Lots of requests for that too.)

3. Rename the photos immediately after import with Library > Rename Photos.
