Import extremely slow if I rename and backup.

I am using the most recent version of Lightroom Classic CC, on a reasonably powerful Windows 7 Pro desktop. Images on a XQD card and all attached to USB3 ports.

I tried to import, rename and backup to an external hard drive using only Lightroom and gave up once it became apparent it was way too slow.

I then imported the 1500 raw files to my PC, renamed them, backed them up to an external drive and then imported them to Lightroom (adding keywords on import too) with no problems at all. If fact, I did all this in only around three times the time it took Lightroom alone to process 7 images!

What's going on?

    Are you using the exact same hardware for both?

    Same Sony card reader. Same files saved to same location on the PC 2TB WD HDD and backed up on the same external drive, a 10TB Seagate Barracuda.
