Import issues with Lightroom Classic

When importing photos into Lightroom (NEF files about 30MB) LR appears to be copying to another drive and takes foe ever.  When finally finished some photos greyed out, some not changed .dng.  In import settings no fields relating to copies ticked.

Have had considerable trouble with new version and would like to go back to previous version but I now understand I deleted it unintentionally when upgrading.
