Import Keywords

I have a large number of photos in my Lightroom Classic catalogue that have keywords.

I want to import these photos into the catalogue of an oder version of Lightroom 6.

Is it possible to make sure that the keywords are brought into the catalogue during the import or is this a non-starter?

Regards,

Cliff

You have to make sure the keywords are written to XMP, either with the menu command Metadata->Save Metadata to Files or with the option in Catalog settings/Metadata that says "Automatically write changes to XMP".

I assume you also realize that certain edits made in LrC will not be understandable in Lr 6.

Just to add some extra detail, activating the setting "automatically write changes" will not in itself trigger anything to be written out. LrC waits until you make some subsequent changes to each particular image, and only then will a copy of all (well, most of) its then-current metadata be written out.

But you can still actively save out metadata straight away, to be sure.

Another consideration: if any of the images that you want to transfer happen to be Virtual Copies, then those can't participate in external writing of XMP - plus, are not separately importable. One solution would be to switch Master / Copy in these cases, such that the desired image version becomes the new master relating to that imported file. This then will write external XMP, and will import to the other Catalog.
