Question

Import pgotos from DVD, New Catalog?

Hello,

I have a few thousand images that were scanned and delivered to me on DVD.

I have about 70,000 images in my one and only catalog.

The was thinking of making a new catalog for the images from the DVD's. Two reasons, One is that they are all family photos and I am going to share them all with family members and two just thought it might be a good place to start a new catalog?

My fear is that it gets confusing having more than one catalog when trying to find an image. My only catalog may have a lot of images, but it is only about 400 GB'S?

In any event, just looking for some feedback or guidance on when to start a new catalog in general?

I selected the entire catalog and selected "build 1:1", the status says "building 1:1 previews", there is nothing in the progress bar. I assume it will take hours, but wonder if there is anyway to "see" what is going on?

Start new catalog? My advice in general is: NEVER. (Although there are exceptions, but your case doesn't seem to be one of them)

The size of your catalog is completely and totally irrelevant.

My opinion is that if you put everything in one catalog, and use the organizational tools in Lightroom effectively, you will have a much EASIER time of finding the photos than if you create multiple catalogs.

Thanks, it has been very helpful to hear these comments. Did NOT create new catalog! Also used importation settings that really helped a lot.

    Two related questions:

    1. I started using 1:1 previews with sidecar adn Smart Previews, but MUCH of my catalog is NOT set up that way. What is the easiest way to convert the entire catalog to 1:1 sidecar and Smart Preview?

    2. Most of my files are jpeg, TIFF and a smaller portion are RAW Nikon. Should I convert the entire catalog to .DNG, or just the RAW files, or not at all?

    1. Select all desired files, then use the menu command Library->Previews->(your choice which items to select)
    2. I don't really see a benefit to converting JPG and TIF to DNG; it seems to me like extra work for no benefit, which I certainly don't recommend. The debate over converting RAW to DNG is huge and voluminous, you can read all you want on the Internet; but I don't convert my RAWs to DNG.

You'll need to import them and Copy them to a folder on one of the drives connected to your computer.

If they are all in there own separate folder, apart from what ever other images you may have on your system and in your LR catalog, there is no need to make a separate catalog for just those images.

Having all images in one catalog is the way LR is designed to work.

There is no need to have more than one catalog.

There are users who have far more than 70,000 images in one catalog. What do you feel you would accomplish by putting these images in a new catalog? Why do you feel it would be necessary to have them in a new catalog? There is nothing wrong, technically, with creating the new catalog if that is what you really think is necessary. Just be sure that is what you want to do.
