Picture in my database.

I use OS to copy and paste to another folder on same HD.

LR doe not recognize it as duplicate and yes do not import duplicates is checked.

Seems to be more of an issue with my older photos.

see attached screen shot. I included the properties for photo in both locations.

Someone please explain

Perhaps you should start with explaining why you need to copy and paste to another folder on the the same HD. The beauty of LRC is that, with effective keywording, and use of Collections, there should be no need to duplicate images into separate folders.

yes it would not want two photos with same name in same place.

But I was importing into another folder and exact copy of the photo in my catalog and it did not recognize it as a duplicate.

So issue still remains - what doesn't LR recognized this photo as duplicate? I still wonder if because it is about 20 year old jpg and something has changed in the file format but that information is above my pay grade.

For computers and programs, the file name is more than the file name.  What we see as a name is the short name.  The computer sees the long name that includes the entire path.   What I see as "P1090756.RW2" as a file from my Panasonic camera, the computer sees  "C:\Working Data\My Graphics\LX100\2016-08-02\P1090756.RW2".  If you put the same file in multiple folder paths, it will not be seen by the computer as the same file.

My experience is that LrC does a good job of getting right using the Import functions to bring files from my SD card to my computer.  But, mixing OS file management with LrC's file management can produce unpredictable results.   In other words, putting duplicates in multiple folders with the OS, you risk confusing LrC.

Assuming you mean LrC and not Lr

It is my experience that if the goal is to import the exact same file into the same destination folder twice, I believe LrC does not allow this, regardless of the setting on "ignore duplicates". If you want to import this file into some other folder, it is my experience that LrC will allow this as long as you have set the option to allow duplicates.

By the way, there are very few situations where importing a file twice (or more) is a good idea. Usually it is a bad idea. Why do you want to import this file twice?
