Question

Importing from iPad

When I'm travelling I'm used to load my RAWs to the iPad and do some local post with Lr, without sync my libraries because I've just the 20GB cloud space. Once in office, I save the RAWs from SD to my local storage (external HDD), then usually import the pics in Lr Classic on PC/Mac, but in that way I loose the post. Which is the best way in order to have original RAW in my HDD resuming the post from the iPad?

Hello, thanks for comments and suggestion.

During Christmas holidays I tried sync and it was working. I have two kind of problem with this method: the limited cloud space and sync time. Infact, I learned that when you sync from iPad to Mac, the RAW files are loaded on cloud (viceversa, when you sync from LrC to Mobile, only smart previews are sync).

Fortunately I found an alternative way to solve my problem.

It's a very simple solution but I didn’t found it before (maybe is a feature of a recent mobile release?).

Simply select all images on Lr Mobile and click below on “Share” command (I hope this is the name in English Lr version), then “Export as”, then select “DNG” (or your RAW format), finally connect an external Disk or memory on USB-C port of the iPad and select your external drive as destination.

The RAW files will be saved on the external Disk drive together with all postproduction parameters.

Finally the postproduced RAW files can be imported in LrC on Mac or PC.

Another method is to Export as DNG to Files to a folder ON the Ipad and then use Airdrop to the Mac.  Then you dont have to plug anything in.   I use this method from my Ipad Pro to Mac and after you do it a few times it is not cumbersome at all.  I only edit on the Ipad if I am away from my computer and internet with a lot of extra time and if you do a little planning it is easy and a lot quicker and has been more error free than Sync when you get back to civilization.

There is a way to do this without syncing, but it is very cumbersome because you will have to do it image by image: export the images from the iPad as DNG. It makes a lot more sense to pay for 1TB cloud space, so you can simply enable sync and let the raw images sync from the cloud to Lightroom on your desktop computer.

When you sync image files from collections created in Lightroom Classic smart-previews are uploaded to Adobe Cloud Storage and they do not utilize your storage allocation. You do not have access to the original files but you can apply edits on your iPad which will sync back to the Computer.
