Question

Importing photos

I have an old LR6.0 installed on an iMac (OS 10.12.6) and a MacBook (OS 12.6.3). Both are using the same catalogue file and same external harddrive for the photos. I haven't been using LR for a while but today I wanted to import some new photos on the MacBook. However, all of the photos were just grey - correct number of files, and correct names ... but no thumbnails of the photos. The importing process just stuck and nothing happened. Then I tried on the iMac - and it just worked fine. Then you might argue that the problems is solved. However, the remaning lifetime of the iMac is expected to be rather short, so I would like to have LR6 working on the MacBook as well. Any ideas of what to do ?

I'm going to assume that the catalog is closed fully before you swap machines?

As well as @dj_paige's suggestion to build previews, you can also try, File>Optimize Catalog..., which also works on the previews database.

Thanks for all your good suggestions. Now I am more confused. As I mentioned it worked fine on my  iMac - so I imported some photos and made some changes to the photos and created some collections. Then I put the hard disk back in my MacBook. And now I could see the thumbnails and import pictures. However, the import and the changes made on the iMac was not visible on the MacBook. OMG ... one problem solved (but don't know how), another appearing. As I see it the catalogue file is the SAME being used on both computers. Should I post this problem as a new topic ?

I'll help you figure this out. Lightroom 6 is a legacy app & isn't tested to work on newer macOS after Catalina (10.15) came out; that is a 64-bit-only operating system.

I am not sure if this is the same problem. Firstly, the LR6 was installed on the MacBook before the 10.15 release, and it has worked after the 10.15 release. Secondly, as I have seen so far, it is only the importing process that is in trouble. Everything else seems to work fine.

As a diagnostic tool, please select the photos with the grey thumbnail, and then Library->Previews->Build 1:1 Previews
