New user - LRC 15.6 imports Ricoh GRlllX DNG files as B&W even though Preferences in LRC are set for Adobe Color?

How do I change to get my imports in Adobe Color?

    Correct answer richardplondon

    When you shoot native Raw (including DNG) the in-camera image settings affect what preview image will be embedded inside that file; besides affecting any separate JPG file (if you are shooting Raw+JPG). That embedded treatment is what gets reviewed within the camera.

    When importing this Raw into LrC the embedded preview image is initially extracted from inside the Raw file (DNG), unless LrC is set to immediately generate its own new one.

    In due course the Library module will anyway substitute that with a new one reflecting LrC’s own processing.

    1:1 previews for the Library happen the same way.

    By contrast the Develop module doesn’t use saved previews at all: everything you see there is “live”. So you will never see the camera’s own preview there, THOUGH those original camera settings can be interpreted from the image file’s camera metadata, and then emulated by applying an equivalent Adobe-supplied camera profile, in conformance with the “Camera Settings” choice in LrC Preferences.

    Update:

    This question may well stem from my unfamiliarity with LRC.

    Importing photos in Library always renders them in the Camera Profile, even though the settings in Preferences are correct. However, pressing on further, when passing to Develop they are rendered in colour.

    I assume that Library is merely rendering jpg thumbnails as RAW dng files, hence initially displaying the b&w camera profile but when moving into Develop the actual RAW file is displayed?

    LRC 15.6 imports Ricoh GRlllX DNG files as B&W even though Preferences in LRC are set for Adobe Color?

    Make sure Preferences > Presets > Raw Defaults > Global is set to Adobe Default, and > Override Global Setting For Specific Cameras is unchecked.

    If  that doesn’t help, attach one of the problem DNGs here, which could provide more clues.

    Depending on the camera model in-camera image settings will be either respected or disregarded, when importing to the Catalog. So, if you’ve chosen Vivid (or B&W, whatever) image mode in the camera menu, an equivalent Camera Vivid (or B&W, whatever) profile is seen after import. With other cameras this may not happen and the image always reflects Lightroom import default processing.

    Generally the LrC Preferences let you choose whether the above (‘Camera Settings’) should be respected or not. You can impose your own choice of processing default though (for Raw; when importing JPG, if - say - the camera had been set to B&W mode then the image data held within that JPG is irretrievably B&W).

    Your desired processing needs to be applied onto a sample image and then recorded from that, into a Develop preset.

    Now you can either manually enter this preset’s name in the “Apply During Import” panel of the Import screen, applying across that whole batch of imports;

    or apply this preset onto the desired photos singly or in the batch, after importing;

    or set this preset to be automatically applied at import as relevant, that is: when photos are from a certain camera model.

    See this article in Lr Classic product help for details.

    Just to note, for completeness: if a given photo was previously worked on in Lightroom or in Adobe Camera Raw and that processing was saved back to the file - when subsequently  imported to a (different) Catalog, this prior processing will be seen, read in, and used: it will take precedence.

    Also to note: if you choose some profile name to be globally used but then for a particular camera model, LrC has got no camera-specific profile instance so-named, it will necessarily fall back to something else. Also: with camera native DNG there is probably a separately-choosable “Embedded” profile option which WILL reflect the (perhaps, varying shot to shot) in-camera image mode settings.
