Question

In Lightroom Classic, Save metadata to file for large catalogs (90k photos) freezes/never finishes.

Hello, we are bringing large but not terribly large photo collections into Lightroom Classic and organizing them into collections. A small collection of keywords (100) are being assigned across large subsets of the photos, e.g. Christmas, Lake Tahoe, Graduation and other similar terms. All seems to be fine except the Save to Metadata process. We can initiate it and it appears to make progress but then never finishes. One trial waited 20 hours to save a set of keywords to around 80k photos.

Any thoughts on how to figure out what's happening?

Oh I wrote that wrong. We are creating new Lightroom Classic catalog with up to 90k files and organizing into collections. Also, this is on a Mac with Lightroom Calssic v12.

You could try saving metadata in smaller batches. There are consistent reports over the years of Lightroom freezing on large tasks such as this.

Please also know that saving metadata to files does not save collection information; all the collection information never appears in the .xmp files and exists only in the catalog file. For this reason, instead of collections, you should use keywords for this type of organizing, as keywords are written to .xmp.
