Question

iPad Lr to LrC via DNG is dropping star ratings

Hello,

I'm confounded by what appears to be a software bug. I travel extensively, and am a heavy shooter. Because I'm often without good internet, transferring images from my iPad to my PC using the cloud is a non-starter. My problem is that, at some time between 10/2023 and 6/2024, the star ratings are not getting transferred to the PC. This is a real problem for me once the images gret to my home desktop Lr and try to sort through a few thousand images.

My workflow:

-Shoot, transfer images from camera card to iPad Lr (v. 10.0.1 currently)

-Edit photos on the iPad Pro, "share/export as/DNG" to get images from the iPad to my SSD every night during my trip, travel home

-Import DNGs into albums on my desktop Windows 10 Pro PC Lr Classic (v. 14.0.1 / Camera Raw 17.0 currently) using the typical import methods to get from my SSD to desktop

Note that there have been no hardware changes on either my iPad or PC since everything worked OK. I have a LrC metadata import preset for DNGs that I always use- no changes to that either.

Thank you,

Brandon Thomas

Hey, @hrufescens. Welcome to the Lightroom Community. I'll help you figure this out.

This is an atypical workflow. Instead of manually exporting it as DNG and reimporting it into Lightroom Classic, have you considered Syncing Lightroom on the iPad to the Lightroom Classic? It as DNG and reimporting it into This way, most metadata and edits will sync overnight and be available on Lightroom Classic as originals.

Coming back to where you stand. Would you mind sharing a set of DNG images where this workflow worked before & a few since when it stopped? Also, does the Windows properties panel show the correct ratings for the DNG files?

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

Hi Sameer (@mention),

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I travel often to places where the internet connection is fragile or nonexistant. It's a big plus for me to travel light (use my iPad for editing), do my star ratings and basic edits while on location, then export the DNGs when I return to civilization. I realize now that Adobe considers my workflow to be atypical, but I'm feeling pretty abandoned with that workflow being, basically, broken. I'd appreciate any help you can offer either explaining what I've done to mess things up, or get this bug fixed if it is actually a bug.

I have two DNGs for you.  One is a shot of a temple from 2023, exported *in* 2023 when the star rating correctly exported. A recent export from the same iPad, same LR album *did not* include the star rating. All my exports since approximately mid-2023 (thirty or so iPad LR albums containing some 3000 photos) have similarly failed to export star ratings.

To summarize, my workflow is: capture, import NEFs to iPad LR, star-rate, do some edits, export to DNG on my SSD as a backup, get home, import DNGs to LrC on my desktop.

Thanks for your help,

Brandon

Thanks for sharing the details. I am sorry for the delay. Would you mind sending the mentioned DNGs to me in a direct message from my profile?

Thanks!
