iPhone 6 photos going direct to icloud- how do I import them to Lightroom?

I'm completely baffled why photos taken on my iPhone 6+, which now go straight to iCloud storage, are not visible when I want to import them to Lightroom CC Classic, I'm told there are "no photos", yet clearly they are there (somewhere!). Prior to the "new Lightroom" they were visible as stored on my iPhone and I could import them from the phone, now they seem to go straight from the phone to the cloud via "new Lightroom", which I'm not ready to use yet (heck, I'm only three-quarters the the old Lightroom CC manual!).

Any simple explanation of how I can just find and import my files to ye olde Lightroom would be most welcome.
