iPhone MOV-Files: Import bugs / Sorting bug

The handling of iPhone 13 Pro Max MOV-Files indicates several bugs in the import of Adobe Lightroom CC (11.31) (macOS 12.4). Since I take several thousand pictures with my iPhone and my camera each week, I do need both of them in one place.

This is how I import my iPhone fotos to Lightroom

a) drag and drop all the pictures from macOS Photos to a directory

b) export all pictures as unedited pictures to the same directory (in order to preserver blur effects etc.)

c) this temporary directory will be imported into Adobe Lightroom CC.

Problem 1:

*Some* mov-files will not be imported. I cannot figure out a system behind this. Some are being labelled as "Kopie" (copy).

The only common denominator is that these files have the extension .MOV capitalized, while those with .mov will be imported (even the original ones of those that have been labelled as "copy" by the export from macOS Photos.)

Problem 2:

After the error message that these files have not been imported, I check on these files: they all play with Finder.

There is nothing wrong with them. So I add them manually to the directories within my folder structure.

Problem 3:

I sync all folders (let's say folder "2022" and get the information that let's say 10 pictures have not been added to the library.

Now *some* of these .MOV files are being addded. Again, there is no undestandable reason behind this.

Problem 4:

When I check these folders individually (let's say 2022-06-04), I get the information that 90 pictures (more than the superstructure in "2022") have not been added to Adobe Lightroom CC leaving me with checking on every single folder and adding more and more pictures to the catalogue which should have been imported in 1).

Problem 5:

*Most* of the .MOV files (and more!) than the ones that have been reported as being unsupported are now in Adobe Lightroom CC. Still some are missing.

Problem 6:

The .mov / .MOV files are now being sorted by date of creation: the result, they are in the correct folders but all video files are shown at the very beginning not at all according to their creation date / time.

I am really sorry, this does not make any sense.

I am really sorry, I cannot be the only one with this problem.

I am a bit frustrated that I cannot even contact anybody from the support although I have been paying for this subscription for years now. All that the Adobe website does is to send me in circles to the Adobe Support Community as if the Community is responsible or able to fix these bugs.

Saying that the iPhone doesn't use a file format that is compatible only indicates that Adobe isn't interested in macOS / iOS users. If there is a file format that is not supported, I would hope that Adobe would be trying to work on this. There is a special relationship between Apple and Adobe, and if there isn't please don't fight your problems out on your user's backs.

This - as it is - is painful for users who work with 70.000 and more pictures a year. If there is anybody with constructive ideas out there I'd be very happy. As of right now, I'm sorry to say, I am deeply frustrated by this process and these bugs.

Thank you.

Problem 6 is an issue that Adobe seems not to be able to solve and hasn't for years. My video filoes whether from my DSLR or from my phone always sort incorrectly. With my DSLRs I finally fixed it by setting the DSLRs timezone to UTC +0 (i.e. Greenwich/London), ignoring daylight savings and simply changing the actual time in camera to the correct local time instead of changing the timezone and DST when I move around the globe. This is the only way to get the videos to sort correctly. Adobe's treatment of timezones in videofiles is just completely broken. Unfortunately this does not help with the phone video as you can't do the same thing on a phone.

No idea about your problems importing the mov files. They all seem to come in for me from my iPhone 12 mini. I always import through the Lightroom app on the phone and have the files synced through Adobe's cloud to my Classic installation though and that seems to work perfectly. My desktop runs Mac OS X Monterey on a i9 intel mac book pro. I have read about problems with video files in Classic on M1 Macs though but they were mostly around incorrect rotation.

Hi Jao,

thanks for being so kind to replying. May I ask how you use the lightroom app?

If I see this correctly, all my photos (30000 this year) will be uploaded to the Adobe Cloud (where I only have 20 gb), then I have to download them again from the Adobe Cloud to lightroom and if I delete them from the Adobe cloud, it will also be deleted from my iCloud photo stream? Is there any way to restrict the data that is being uploaded i.e. by time frames or the like? Do you get DNG / HEIC-files or JPGs? Is motion blur and are videos included?

Thanks for your time and your feedback. Alex.
