Question

Is it possible to migrate a catalog from Collections to Folders?

I have a LR catalog based on COLLECTIONS and need to migrate them to a FOLDER based catalog.

I've been using that catalog for years (back when LR worked just like that) and I don't want to lose all the keywords I've assigned to my pictures.

The collections I use exactly replicate the folder structure of my external HD.

Is there a way to do it?

Thanks!!

Thanks for the extra detail — that does change the picture, and please don't re-import/add those folders or go ahead with that Merge for now. As you guessed, that risks treating photos already in the catalog as new/duplicates, which is exactly how edits and keywords can get stranded.

Please try this safe test with just one photo first — it moves nothing:

    1. In the Library module, open one of your Collections and select a single photo.

    2. Right-click the photo and choose Go to Folder in Library. Lightroom Classic should switch to the Folders panel and highlight the folder it has recorded for that photo.

Could you tell us what happens? Does it jump to a folder (and what folder/volume path does it show), is that folder greyed out or marked with a ?, or does nothing happen at all? Also check whether that photo shows as missing (an exclamation mark on the thumbnail).

That result will tell us whether we're dealing with a hidden/collapsed folder view or a folder location Lightroom has lost track of — and the right fix is different in each case, so I don't want to guess before we know.

Hi there, good news — there is no separate “folder-based” catalog type to migrate to, so you don't need to convert anything and you won't lose your edits.

Every photo in the catalog already lives in a real folder on your external drive, and the Folders panel in the Library module shows exactly that folder structure. A Collection is just a virtual grouping — browsing the same photos via the Folders panel instead of Collections doesn't change the photos, and their edits are stored in the catalog either way.

Since your collections already mirror your drive's folder structure, you can simply start working from the Folders panel.

If any photos do need to change folders on disk, do it inside Lightroom Classic: select them in Grid view and drag them onto the destination folder in the Folders panel. That moves the files on the hard drive too, and Lightroom Classic keeps track of them, so nothing goes missing. Please don't move them in Finder or Explorer instead.

Official notes on moving photos between folders: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/desktop/manage-catalogs-and-files/photos.html

    Hope that reassures you!

Thank you for your fast and kind response, however… 😀

The folder panel doesn’t show the folders the pictures from the collections are stored in.

It seems to me I have two choices:

    1.  Add the folders manually to Lightroom (losing my edits and keywords in the process, since LR treats them as new files).
    2. Re-link the Collections to a folder. When I did that LR showed me a Merge button, took a few seconds and a prompt warned me that some pictures couldn’t be merged, then showed me the un-merged files….52.000+ files and counting, basically my entire library.

I cannot grasp the meaning of this statement. Collections are not stored in folders.

It would be extremely helpful to see a screen capture of a collection (or part of a collection, as much as fits on one screen), and another screen capture when you right-click on one of the photos in the collection and select “Go to Folder in Library”, as explained above by @CORCTON34033231

Please show us the ENTIRE Library Module window in these screen captures, and do not use a cell phone to make the screen captures. On WIndows, use the built-in program called Snipping Tool (on Mac, I’m sure there is a similar program to make screen captures, but I do not know what it is called)
