Question

Is it possible to transfer edited photos on Lr6 from one imac to another with Lightroom classic?

We would like to purchase a new imac (our old one is 2009).  On that imac I used Lr 6 exclusively.  I'm fearful about getting a new imac in that my very old (30 year-old and more), precious, already edited photos on Lr6 won't be able to get transferred to a new Lightroom Classic I will be installing on the new imac.  I'm not a tech savvy person, but can hopefully hire someone to do it if it's possible.  Is it possible to do it?  Lr6 has not had any updates since 2017, and I'm concerned there won't be a way to transfer these photos to a new imac/Lr classic.  Advice?  Thanks in advance!

You are not going to lose those images because they are not "in" Lightroom. They are in folders on your computer. I think the best thing you could do is purchase your new computer from a reputable dealer, and have them transfer all of your images, exactly as they are organized on your current computer, to the new one. Have them transfer all of your user files to the new computer, exactly as they are organized on your current computer. Then, it would seem to me that all that would be necessary would be to install Lightroom Classic. It would find the catalog you were using previously, and would upgrade it by creating a new copy of it that is compatible with Lightroom Classic. Then Lightroom Classic would open, and if the images are positioned as they were on the old computer everything should simply start normally and you can go to work in Lightroom Classic.

It might all seem like a big mysterious and scary step. But in reality it really isn't. I had to make the switch once to a new computer and it seemed like a daunting task. I followed the steps I outlined above, and it was seamless. It just worked. Nothing to be afraid of, in my opinion.

Thanks so much, Jim!  I'm feeling so much better already.  A huge load has been taken off me.

Thanks again for taking the time to advise and reassure.  It is much appreciated!  Happy New Year!

Hi Annafl,

Read the isntructions JimHess  sent and I would add the suggestion that you do not get rid of your old Mac until you  have tested and found all your photos and they are working in Ligthroom. That is just a safeguard!

Well don't be afraid, this is a built in feature of Lightroom 6/Lightroom Classic.

Instructions: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-move-lightroom-to-a-new-computer/

Please read them carefully, and follow them exactly. Do not try steps that are not specifically mentioned. Pay particular attention to #6, which specifically instructs to NOT import photos.

dj_paige, thanks so much!  You've given me hope.  However, it seems complicated to me (I'm old and not tecchy), and don't trust myself to be able to do it.  I barely understand the tutorial.  Where do you suggest I go to find someone to help me do it?  Any ideas?

Actually, I have no clue who can help you. If there is a local photography club, and they have someone who is proficient in Lightroom, maybe that's the answer. (If you do connect with such an individual, specifically ask if he/she knows how to move Lightroom to a new computer — you might get someone who is a wizard at editing in Lightroom but doesn't understand how to move Lightroom to a new computer).

Of course, there are plenty of people here in this forum who can help, some of them are very good, and then there's me.

And whatever you do, please make sure you have backups of all of your photos, and backups of your catalog file(s).
