Jpg Images are randomly renamed to name.tmp

Hello,

I use  Lightroom Classic under Windows 11. All my images are located on a Synology Diskstation with DSM 7.1.1. The image Folder is mounted as a networkdrive via SMB with a user that has read and write permissions on that share and all folders within it. 

Until now everything worked well. I don't now exactly when it started but the day before tomorrow i realized, that Lightroom renames jpg files to name.tmp and does not recognize the images anymore. I have 10000 files renamed that way now! 😞

I can reproduce this behavior like that:

 

* rename the images to name.jpg

* sync folder ib Lightroom -> images are back again

* save metadata

 

When save metatadate I sometimes get the message that there was an error saving the metadata. Errorcode is 29. "Unknown File I/O errror" is the messge translated from German.

 

Afterwards the images are renamed to *.tmp again. 

 

Can someone tell me, what happened? I didn't change permissions or something nlike that. 

Only Lightroom and the Nas wher updated frequently. Lightroom recently but not before I saw this problem.

Yes I deactivated this setting immediately but the files are still renamed. 
I also have the option "Include develop settings in metadata inside JPGs.." deactivated. 
But the problem resists. 


I just renamed the images with a counter before the name and the problem disapeared! Strange!
Perharps i was caused by the fact, that LR recognized them as douplicate because the where exported from CR2 files, that are stored in a compltely different storage location?

It sounds like there's some kind of disagreement between LR and the NAS over file permissions. When LR saves metadata to a JPEG, instead of modifying the existing file, it often writes a temporary file containing the new version of the JPEG and then renames that file on top of the existing file. From your description, it sounds like the rename is failing.

 

It also sounds like you have enabled the option Catalog Settings > Metadata > Automatically Write Changes Into XMP.  I recommend disabling that immediately until you resolve the problem.

thanks for your quick reply!

In my case there are only jpgs. For those images there are no RAW files. 

What I do not understand is, why LR touches the original files at all. Perhaps because it handles jpgs other than raw files when they ar stand alone images?

For raw files I have no such problems. The xmp files could be written without problems.

But for jpgs there are no xmp files and the jpg itself is overridden to *.jpg.tmp.

Hence raw and jpg images live in the same folder structure with the same permission, I'm not sure if permissions are the problem.

 

For some jpg images there are name.jpg and name.jpg.tmp at the same time. So it seems that this ist the correct way. And the *.jpg.tmp was not deleted yet. 

In the other cases it seems to be a problem of renaming back the tempfile to the original one.

One more thing I realised is, that during the meta write process there are also name.swp files in the folder. But only for a short time.
