Question

Keyword All By Mistake

Lightroom Classic....Don't talk to someone while you are adding keywords. I thought I was "Select All" in "Previous Import" but I selected all in the entire catalogue, 196,000 images. Now "autumn" has been added to every image, negating all of the previously truly autumn keyworded images. I immediately tried "Undo" but that simply unselected all. Is there a way to edit actions by date such as "Most Recent" keywords which I could delete? I have saved a backup catalog not too long ago but obviously if I revert to using the old one, I will have to re-import and re-keyword many images added since. THANKS!

"I immediately tried "Undo" but that simply unselected all."

Normally Undo would reverse the keyword action, even when applied to thousands of images. Not sure why it didn't work for you.

Unfortunately there's no history for metadata-changing actions like there is for Develop settings.

Other than going to a backup catalog, there's another approach that would require some fussy care but might save some re-keywording effort. It will select all the photos in the current catalog that had Autumn applied in the backup catalog.

Steps:

1. Make a fresh backup of the catalog, just in case.

2. Open the most recent backup catalog that has correct Autumn keywords.

3. Select all the photos with the keyword Autumn.

4. Use the Any Filter plugin's Sort command to export a CSV file of all the file paths of the selected photos:

5. Open the exported CSV file in Excel or Google Sheets and copy the first column, which contains the full file paths of all the photos from step 4 (those in the backup catalog containing Autumn).

6. Open the current catalog.

6. In the Keyword List, delete the Autumn keyword, effectively removing it from all photos.

7. Run the Any Filter Search command and define this search filter, pasting the list of file paths from step 5 where the red arrow indicates:

8. Go to All Photographs and do Photo > Stacking > Expand All Stacks.

9. Run the Any Filter search filter saved in step 7. With 196K photos selected, this could take many minutes.

10. The filtered result will contain all the photos that had the Autumn keyword in the backup catalog.  Apply Autumn to those photos.

There's a 30-day free trial for Any Filter, so you don't have to buy it.
