Keyword Sets update more slowly, leading to errors in adding/removing keywords from within set

I have a workflow set up where I (try to) do rapid keywording using keys bound to Alt+1 to Alt+9 to assign from the 9 keywords in my selected Keyword Set. My desired workflow is to navigate with the left and right keys, pressing the appropriate keyword set shortcut for any applicable keywords, then navigate to the next photo, do the same ... repeating this many times. In theory this should work fine ... for example: right arrow, Alt+1, right arrow, Alt+1, Alt+2, right arrow, Alt+7, right arrow, Alt+1. Each time the Alt+# key toggles the appropriate keyword in my "Keyword Set".

Here's the issue: when navigating among images, LrC takes a couple seconds to update the highlighted status of the keywords in the Keyword Set. If I press the Alt+# combination intending to add a keyword to two images in a row, the second image doesn't get the keyword assigned because the keyword is still highlighted from the previous image. I'll explain with steps:

1. Start with a set of photos that have no active keywords from the keyword set. The per-photo keywords are empty. The next steps take place quickly.

2. Select photo 1

3. Hit Alt+1. LrC says "Adding keyword ___ (1)"

4. Press "right"

5. Hit Alt+1. LrC says "Removing keyword ___ (1)"

If I hestitate between steps 4 and 5, the keyword is correctly added. But if I don't pay attention, I'll end up removing a keyword instead, which is counterintuitive. The problem is that, after step 4, LrC updates the image and several other parts of the UI very quickly, but the highlighted items in the Keyword Set take more time. If I press the key for a keyword that was highlighted on the previous image before LrC dims it, it will simply "remove" that (nonexistent) keyword from the photo. This is the wrong behavior - it should be adding that keyword just like it did for the previous photo.
