Lightroom 3.6 Product Key not accepted

I recently purchased a copy of lightroom 3.0 for mac OSX from Amazon.

This was the student edition so I had to send a copy of my student ID to Adobe in order for them to give me a serial number.

I installed and used the trial version for a couple of weeks while I waited for the serial number.

During this time I updated to version 3.6.

A couple of weeks later, they've now given me one but it does not work.

I only get a red cross, with no explanation as to why the serial does not work.

I spoke to "customer care" live chat who said they cannot help and I should talk to the forums.

Has anyone else had the same problem?

What can / should I do to get this serial number to work?

I doubt you purchased LR 3 (that's THREE) from Amazon recently. LR 3 stopped being sold sometime in 2011, 6 years ago.

Could be you actually purchased LR 6? And that serial number will only work with the version number it was intended for.

No, I purchased LR3 Student edition from Amazon (not amazon marketplace).

You can doubt it all you like, but that is the case.

Well the serial number you have clearly isn't for LR 3 as if it were it would work.

The only seller I can find on Amazon is someone in Arizona.
