Lightroom 4 crashing and Sonoma

I am using Lightroom 4  and a Mac Pro with Sonoma 14.1.2 . Last March I moved my lightoom catalog and photos to an external drive . Due to death in the family have not opened lightoom or have not download any new photos. I  pluged in the hard drive that has lightroom catalog and photos.  Next  as a test put in my sd card copied two photos  on to a folder on the desktop. I then opened lightroom imported the 2 photos. Lightroom crashes when I try to do anything. My guess is Lighroom 4 is not compatable with Sonoma 14.1.2 and wonder if my only option is to upgrade to Lightroom Classis but unsure how to do this and how I would get help

No I don't pay a fee  for Lightrom 4 bought out right years ago.  Now I am really confused about the newer softwear Lightroom 4 subcription you mentioned

Then you don't have the newer Lightroom 4, you have the older Lr 4, which will probably not run on Sonoma. You want to subscribe to the Photography Plan (not the Lightroom Plan) and then you can use your Lr 4 catalog in the new Lightroom Classic 13. Converting is very simple, just install Lightroom Classic 13 and then open your Lr 4 catalog and it will be upgraded to an LrC 13 catalog.

Just to add a detail to the above correct information from @JohanElzenga and @AxelMatt  — you do not want to subscribe to the (somewhat confusingly named) "Lightroom Plan". As stated, you want the "Photography Plan".

What about Lightroom 4 do you talk? The old Lightroom 4 or do you have a subscription and use Lightroom CC?

In case you use the old version of Lightroom 4, it is a over 10 years old software and not compatible with newer operating systems. If you like to use Lightroom furthermore you have to buy a subscription, like the Photography Plan.

Your existing catalog can be used also in the newer version. It will be converted on the first opening in the new version.

    My System: Intel i7-8700K - 64GB RAM - NVidia Geforce RTX 3060 - Windows 11 Pro 25H2 -- LR-Classic 15 - Photoshop 27 - Nik Collection 9 - PureRAW 6 - Topaz Photo AI

I have an  subsription for old  lightroom 4.  I was nervous about the upgrade and how difficult it is to upgrade the catalog and nervous to go ahead

If you mean the >10 years old Lightroom 4, there is no subscription. It was a single-time purchase. On the other hand, (yes it is confusing) there is a newer software named Lightroom 4 (about 3-4 years old) which is subscription. This newer Lightroom 4 should run fine on Sonoma.

So do you pay a subscription fee monthly or annually, or not?

Lightroom 4 is indeed very old, and unlikely to be compatible with Sonoma. You need to take the 'Photography Plan' subscription to Lightroom Classic (and Photoshop). Install Lightroom Classic, let it open your catalog (it will tell you it needs to upgrade it), let it upgrade the catalog and you're good to go.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.
