Question

lightroom 6 classic updated on catalina - how to proceed now?!?

Hi there

unfortunately I updated my new iMac to Catalina before knowing about the problems with Lightroom...how stupid!!!

I was using Lightroom Classic before which - obviously - isn't working any longer now. Apparently not even uninstalling LR 6 seems to be possible. As I realise I will be forced now to monthly payment subscription anyway,,,, But much more important actually is my question HOW TO MIGRATE ON LR 9 (Classic or CC) WITH THAT OLD VERSION LR6 ON CATALINA, WHICH IS NOT RUNNIG ANYMORE? How can I uninstall the version that isn't working any longer and how can I migrate my pix without loosing anything during the process?... And, would it be more clever to migrate to a newer Classic version first than to change to CC?...

I still have my old iMac running (Sierra). Would it be an idea to update on this Mac first? But then how to get the full running LR9 version and it's content to the new iMac with Catalina (on which the fail version of LR6 is already installed)....?

I am desperate. Tremendous work a few years ago to migrate from iPhoto to LR and now I find myselve reset to zero?!?... Just lost! Thanks for any support.... Corinne

You can choose not to uninstall LR6 when installing LR9.

According to this Help document

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/keep-previous-versions.html

the default is now that previous versions are not uninstalled.

And, as I understand it, LR6 is no longer working, so you don't really have anything to lose by installing LR9.

Hi everybody, txs again for your support

Everything worked perfectly well as promised by you :-). Actually this was probably to be excpected as Adobe has another new customer now that pays LR on monthly basis.... well done ;-o

Anyway, the product is nice and I'll always be up to date now

Kind regards, Corinne

I have never used a Mac, have been a Windows user all my life. However, my understanding is that to "uninstall" Lightroom 6 all that is necessary is to delete the program from your computer. Someone may correct me if that is not true. The program, Lightroom 6, is not 32-bit, it's the installer that is a problem.

When you install Lightroom Classic there is no part of Lightroom 6 that is "upgraded". Lightroom Classic is a complete, independent, new application that is installed. It will find the catalog that was used by Lightroom 6 and will create an upgraded version of the catalog that is compatible with Lightroom Classic. The upgrade process that you would follow would be the same process that anyone would follow that upgraded from Lightroom Classic 8.3.1 to 9.0 on Catalina.

In reality, you will not be "upgrading" Lightroom 6. You will be installing Lightroom Classic 9.1, and it will find your old Lightroom 6 catalog and will create a new copy of it that is compatible with the new version of Lightroom. Lightroom Classic 9.1 has been specifically upgraded to be more compatible with the Catalina operating system.

The process I have described is literally the ONLY path you can take to upgrade to Lightroom Classic. You can choose to be afraid of it for as long as you wish. But in the end it is the step you are going to have to take to upgrade because it isn't going to change. The choice is yours.

Thanks again, Jim. This sounds like a feasable option to me. Good to know that LR9 will will still find my old catalog. I'll keep you posted about the result 🙂

Thanks a lot for your answer and your information, Jim. What your describing looks like a regular updating of the program - under normal cirumstances I'd probably manage that. In my matter it is actually a huge Mac problem. Many warnings around about that problem but I have seen them too late, unfortunately. On Catalina version it's not even possible anymore to uninstall LR6 at all (32.bit version, Catalina requests 64-bit). So I reckon that a normal upgrade to LR9 won't be possible (or, at the moment I don't dare).

Anyway....thanks a lot, I'll see where I'll get with that stuff. Kind rgds, Corinne

In addition what Jim has written take a look here: https://laurashoe.com/2019/11/29/video-tutorial-how-to-upgrade-to-lightroom-classic-9-from-any-prior-version/

There's a good tutorial how to upgrade an older version to the new version.

My System: Intel i7-8700K - 64GB RAM - NVidia Geforce RTX 3060 - Windows 11 Pro 25H2 -- LR-Classic 15 - Photoshop 27 - Nik Collection 9 - PureRAW 6 - Topaz Photo AI

Thanks to you too, Axel. I've read laurashoes post earlier. It's just that I don't dare trying this procedure as I read everywhere that LR6 can't even been uninstalled anymore from Catalina. I have the old program and all my local folders on my new Mac but am not able to open the programm anymore - looks like a little trap to me 😞

I am wondering if it would be a possible solution to upgrade LR6 to LR 9 on my old Mac (still running on Sierra) and then transfer the updated version by means of time machine to the new computer....? Or just dare to try a regular update to LR9 and see what happens. Would be a shame though if this would impair the function the new Mac already. As I am neither a computer specialist nor a LR Pro this situation poses major problems to me.

Kind regards, Corinne

First of all, Lightroom 6 is not Classic. It is Lightroom 6. Secondly there is no more CC anything. There is Lightroom Classic, and there is Lightroom. Lightroom Classic stores images in folders on your computer and utilizes a local catalog. Lightroom stores images in the cloud.

Lightroom Classic 9.1 is the latest version of Lightroom Classic. If you decide that it is what you are going to use, and install it, you will replace the old Lightroom 6 under a "normal" installation. And when you run that new program for the first time it will prompt you to upgrade your old Lightroom 6 catalog. This will create a new copy of that catalog in the new format, and will include all the work that you have performed previously. It will not be compatible with older versions of Lightroom. But when the conversion is complete you should be able to continue uninterrupted and Lightroom Classic with all the work you have done previously.

I am a Windows user, and that's the way things work on my Windows computer. I have never used a Mac. It's possible that the old Lightroom 6 will be left installed on your Mac, and you will have to remove it manually. If I'm wrong, someone might correct me on that. I hope you'll forgive my ignorance on that matter because I have never used a Mac computer.
