Thank you, Just Shoot Me, for taking the time and trying to help me with the problem I had with Lightroom Classic CC not reading the Raw files from my Sony a7r3. After I had posted my appeal in this forum, I found an article on Google according to which I needed to download the Creative Cloud app and then update Lightroom through the app. I did just that and my problem was solved. I thank you and all others who may have even thought of helping. I hope this answe helps future users who may face the same problem I faced not too long ago.

My RAW files for the a7R3 are not yet recognized in Lightroom Classic or Lightroom CC. I had to convert to JPEG in the Sony converter and then develop in Lightroom.

Adobe - when are you going to update Lightroom Classic? This should just be a file config change to support the camera since the RAW file itself is the same.

The next release of LR 7 (7.1, Classic) and LR 6 (6.14, the last for 6) will likely come out this month, according to Adobe.  Historically Sony cameras get raw support in the release following their announcement about 60% of the time. Since this camera was announced 10/25, it seems likely will be included in the next release.  But only Adobe knows for sure, and they almost never say ahead of time.

Usually support for a new camera involves more than a "config change".  Camera manufacturers feel free to change their proprietary raw formats, and Adobe has to generate camera profiles from an actual camera.  Many manufacturers don't provide pre-release cameras to Adobe.  LR's competitor Capture One appears to have a partnership with Sony whereby they deliver Capture One Sony when a new Sony camera is released.

Of course, if manufacturers used the DNG standard format, there wouldn't be a wait at all for LR (or any other app) to support most new cameras.  So you might direct your ire to Sony as well.

It sounds like there is a problem, and in this case, a partnership problem on the part of Adobe and Sony. What I am asking Adobe to do is two things:

    1. As the owner of one of the largest photo software programs, I am asking them to own this on the behalf of customers. We are paying for this to work Regardless of the Partnership challenge. I would be happy to sign a petition to Sony if Adobe led this on the behalf of customers. And

    2. Raise the bar for the customer experience and at least tell customers how they can manipulate these instead of an error message saying the file cannot be read. What does the customer need to do to make it work?

You'll need to use the Sony supplied RAW converter until Adobe updates LR to support that camera.

In fact as far as I know that camera has not been released yet. Supposedly Nov 30 is the release date.

Not sure if Adobe will update LR 6 for that camera. They, Adobe, stated they will continue updates for LR 6 until early 2018. So they very well may include that camera in one of the LR updates to come.

I thought LR 6 already had a DNG converter built in?  Whenever I import pics from my A7RII memory card, it says converting to DNG in the process bar in the top left of LR.

Yes but it can only convert raw files that are already supported by the version of LR that you are using. If you want to convert raw files from newer cameras than your Lightroom version you need the latest standalone dng converter.

The a7r3 is not supported by any version of Lightroom yet. Lightroom 6 will likely never support it and to get native support you might have to go to Lightroom Classic which also not yet supports it but will likely be updated sometime soon. If you want to stick with 6 you will likely have to use dng converter which is a free download from Adobe (never download it from somewhere else) which will likely be updated sometime soon to support the A7rIII.
