When I do into Develop and take an action the screen goes black, how to do I fix this?

Looks like no image is selected. Are you perhaps using a smart collection or a filter that filters on 'no edits'? As soon as you make some edit, the image no longer fits the criteria for the filter/smart collection, so it disappears.
