Question

Lightroom AI Update broken??

I have ~300 photos from an event that I need to export. I ran them through denoise. When I go to export them all, I get a message that some of them need AI update. OK, but it hangs up every damn time. So I try to select all - Photo -> Update AI Settings, but that option is grayed out, evidently because one or more files don't need AI Update...So right now I'm having to go through each file, one by one and updating AI. What was supposed to save time has now become a huge time suck. I'm working under a deadline and this is killing me.

Hi @Dan Selvidge

Just checking in to see if you're still running into that issue. Let me know when you get a chance!
Thanks so much,

"So I try to select all - Photo -> Update AI Settings, but that option is grayed out"

You're tripping over LR's overly complicated rules for handling multiple selected photos (rules that no one can accurately remember).

There is no menu command Photo > Update AI Settings.  In Library, it's Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings, and in Develop, it's Settings > Update AI Settings.

I'm guessing you're in Develop, and you're selecting multiple photos from the filmstrip. In general, when you're in Loupe view (a single photo showing in the main panel of Develop or in Library), many (but not all commands) only apply to the current (most-selected) photo.

So if you're in Develop Loupe view, Settings > Update AI Settings will only apply to the current photo, regardless of what's selected in the filmstrip. Further, it will be greyed out if the current photo's AI settings don't need updating.

Similarly, if you're in Library Loupe view, Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings will only apply to the current photo. But unlike in Develop, Update AI Settings never greys out, regardless of whether the photo(s) need updating.

There are two methods to apply Update AI Settings to multiple selected photos:

- In Library Grid view, do Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings.

- In Library Loupe view or Develop Loupe view, select the photos in the filmstrip, right-click one of them, and do  Develop Settings > Update AI Settings.

There must be a different problem if that menu is dimmed. It should not be an issue if some images in the selection don't need an AI update. Lightroom will simply skip those.
