Lightroom Classic 11.3.1 does not import wav files on Windows 10 Pro 21H2 when tethered to nikon d5

I've researched this and it appears to have been a problem in the past, which was fixed in a subsequent version of Lightroom.  It's possible the problem has returned.

I have a Nikon D5, firmware version 1.4 (CFexpress compatibility) and am importing from a CFexpress card into Lightroom 11.3.1 on Windows 10 Pro 21H2.

When I do voice memos, I see wav files created on the card.  The files are playable on the card.  When I import from the CFexpress card reader, the wav files are copied over.  However, if I connect the laptop to the camera via USB as I would in the field and import that way, an import does NOT copy over the wav files.

Is this a bug?

A note about LR terminology: "Tethering" refers to controlling the camera live from within LR, as you might in a studio.  "Importing with a USB cable" refers to importing with a USB cable instead of a memory card.  Are you tethering or importing?

"if I connect the laptop to the camera via USB as I would in the field and import that way, an import does NOT copy over the wav files."

My understanding, in which I have modest confidence (85%): When connected by USB cable, some cameras will appear in the left side of the Import window under both the Devices and the Files sections.  I believe importing from the Devices section won't import WAV files because it uses the industry Picture Transfer Protocol, which doesn't support WAV files.  The Files section accesses the card in the camera the same as if you had the card in a card reader and can see the WAV files. But not all cameras support this.

You're right, I meant importing with a usb cable, not tethering.

Thanks, although disappointing, that makes sense.  As it demonstrably works with a CFexpress reader, it's likely a limitation of the camera.

One thing I noticed with the reader is that import is significantly faster.  In both cases the interface is USB 3, but I remember reading that the D5 doesn't support... multiple channels, I think it's called, that the CFexpress format supports, so the camera's access speed is limited.

All good.  Thanks very much for the explanation.  Upshot is that I will need to carry a CFexpress reader into the field.

Yeah, PTP (which is implemented by the operating system, not LR) is pretty slow in comparison to directly reading the files from the card.  That's why LR made the Files section in Import the default for card readers and, when supported by the camera, USB cables.
