Question

Lightroom Classic 15.6 – Wacom Intuos4 pen not working correctly with Remove tool (works in Masks and Photoshop)

Hello,

I'm experiencing an issue with the Remove tool in Lightroom Classic when using my Wacom Intuos4 tablet (PTK-640). The problem started approximately two months ago and has persisted through subsequent Lightroom updates.

System configuration:

  • Lightroom Classic: 15.6 (Build 202609251514-f839cde9)

  • Camera Raw: 18.7

  • Operating system: Windows 11

  • Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, 8 GB

  • NVIDIA driver: 32.0.16.1742

  • Tablet: Wacom Intuos4 M (PTK-640), a discontinued model

Problem description:

When using the Wacom pen to paint a selection with Lightroom Classic's Remove tool, the brush does not respond correctly.

The red selection overlay usually does not appear while drawing. Occasionally, after lifting the pen, a red selection appears with a noticeable delay, but it only partially corresponds to the area I painted. Some parts of the stroke are missing, and the resulting selection is inaccurate.

This makes the Remove tool practically unusable with the pen.

Important observations:

  1. The Remove tool works perfectly with the mouse.

  2. The Wacom pen works correctly with every other Lightroom function I have tested.

  3. In particular, the Brush tool in the Masks panel works perfectly, with accurate, immediate strokes.

  4. Object selection in the Masks panel also works correctly.

  5. The Wacom pen and its programmable buttons work correctly throughout Lightroom.

  6. All brushes and other pen functions work perfectly in Photoshop.

  7. The problem affects both the Remove and Heal modes of Lightroom's Remove tool.

  8. The problem occurs whether Generative AI is enabled or disabled.

  9. The issue is not related to one particular photograph.

Troubleshooting already performed:

  • Disabled Windows Ink specifically for Lightroom in Wacom Tablet Properties: no improvement.

  • Tested with Windows Ink enabled: same problem.

  • Completely disabled GPU acceleration in Lightroom Classic (Preferences > Performance): no improvement.

  • Tested with and without Generative AI: same problem.

  • Tested different Remove tool modes: same problem.

  • Confirmed that the mouse works correctly in the same tool.

I have restored my original GPU and Windows Ink settings after testing.

My assessment:

Since the pen works correctly with Lightroom's masking brushes and all Photoshop brushes, while the mouse works correctly with Lightroom's Remove tool, this appears to be a specific compatibility issue between Lightroom Classic's Remove tool and Wacom pen input.

I understand that my Wacom Intuos4 is no longer officially supported by Wacom. However, it continues to work correctly in Photoshop and in Lightroom's other functions.

I would like to know:

  • Is this a known issue in recent Lightroom Classic versions?

  • Have other Wacom users experienced delayed, incomplete or inaccurate strokes specifically with the Remove tool?

  • Is there a workaround that does not require downgrading Lightroom, reinstalling the application or resetting existing preferences?

  • Could this issue be investigated by the Lightroom Classic development team?

I use Lightroom Classic professionally for wedding photography, so maintaining the latest version and preserving my existing catalogues and production workflow is important.

For now, I can use the mouse for removing objects or switch to Photoshop, but I would appreciate a fix that restores normal Wacom pen functionality in Lightroom.

Thank you.

    Hi @Generous_moment99a4,

Thank you for the very detailed report and for all the isolation you’ve already done. We are tracking Wacom-specific issues involving the Remove tool, and your observation that the same pen works correctly with the Masking brush and in Photoshop, while the mouse works correctly in Remove, is particularly useful.

Your report shows a somewhat different symptom from the cases we already have.

Since you’ve already tested Windows Ink on/off, GPU acceleration on/off, Generative AI on/off, multiple Remove modes, and different images, there’s no need to repeat those tests.

Could you please share a short screen recording showing the same simple stroke first with the Wacom pen and then with the mouse on the same image? If possible, also include Help > System Info > Copy in your reply.

I’ll add your Windows 11 / Lightroom Classic 15.6 case to the investigation so the team can determine whether this is another manifestation of the existing Wacom Remove issue or a separate regression.

In the meantime, using the mouse for Remove or Photoshop for pen-based removal remains the safest workaround.

Thanks again for documenting this so thoroughly.

    Best,
    Anshul Saini
