Lightroom Classic 4.4 questions on Mac

Hi, I had a few questions...I only know enough Lightroom to do what I have always done & I'm afraid of change & updating because I'm terrified of losing all my work. I have external hard drives that I download photos from the card reader to.

When I import them to Lightroom I have 2 questions...

1. I am no longer able to "name them". Years ago I could say Smith wedding, Baby James but now it is only the date the photos were taken. Is there any way to name them again?

2. My biggest issue...when I export the photos back to the external hard drive...it will correctly go to the correct place & sub folder BUT it will also go to a random folder from a completely different shoot. Always the same random folder. So for example...in the folder Patrick's birthday...there are now numerous subfolders since 2010 filled with the photos over the years. If I delete them-they disappear from Lightroom & allllll my work is gone. So now it takes up so much room on my hard drives/computer. I tried to look for something that might be set on the wrong thing but I really don't want to mess anything up since technically everything still works it's just a hassle. I apologize if this is a dumb error on my part but computers scare me haha

Thank you so much in advance!!

Also- should I update to the new Lightroom CC or update on the classic. I have so many weddings & shoots that I don't want to lose (I have them all saved obviously but the "work" I've done I would rather not redo haha)

It's been so long I don't remember if it automatically did it or if I renamed them once imported into Lightroom but they just import as a date for years now & you are not able to click on them to change the name (unless there is another way I did not know of). I never deleted the photos from Lightroom, I deleted the duplicate folders that you can see in the following photo. Under Patrick's 1st you can see from 2010 on it makes subfolders....I never did that nor wanted it. When I export from Lightroom I put the photos into a subfolder marked "edit" from the original shoot...but somehow this alternate folder gets created & when I delete it it causes the folder in Lightroom to become "offline" JimHess

Folders can be named prior to importing, on the import dialog. Whether or not dated subfolders are created is controlled on the import dialog. Folders can be renamed in the library module. It would appear that you would do well to watch a few Lightroom tutorials. There are a ton of them on YouTube. It's getting late here, and I'm going to shut down for the night. But you would do well to take some time to really learn how to use Lightroom. Lightroom 4.4 is quite out of date. It would be your decision whether or not you update/upgrade to a newer version.

So here are a few screen shots..I guess technically it's Lightroom 4. I haven't been able to name folders in Lightroom so years it's not a big deal but I thought I would ask. & at least since 2010 maybe it's been I guess double saving the exported files. I never knew it because it was to a random folder but when I would get notified that storage was low etc I knew there was no way that could be so I eventually found all those files. I deleted some & when I went to look at them in Lightroom again the folder had the ? & said it couldn't be located/offline.

Why haven't you been able to name files? That hasn't changed. How did you delete the folders?

We need more information. First of all, there is no Lightroom Classic 4.4. If you are using Lightroom 4.4, and you are saying that it "used to do" certain things, that version of Lightroom hasn't been modified for years. Either something is changed on your computer, or you have changed something in your workflow. What version of Lightroom are you actually using? What operating system are you using? When did you start experiencing these problems that you have described?
