Maybe I mis-understand the question, but reading this-

On the Import screen on the right hand side is a section called "Destination". In that section one can select from a dropdown "by date". That date is not the "capture date" of the imported photos

I think you are talking about the Date "Format" that is shown. This is NOT the EXIF Capture date in your images. (Only the Format for the destination new folders)

If you scroll down the Destination Panel you will see the Folders that will be created based on the Date EXIF in your photos-

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.3, Photoshop 27.5, ACR 18.3, Lightroom 9.3, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.3 .

As long as the capture date is available in the EXIF data, I have never seen LR use any other date. If you do the import, what date does LR seem to be using?

Yes, Lightroom Classic 9.1 does indeed import and organize by date. I am doing it.

Can you show us a screen capture of what you are talking about?

A screen shot won't show anything. On the Import screen on the right hand side is a section called "Destination". In that section one can select from a dropdown "by date". That date is not the "capture date" of the imported photos but some other date held in the EXIF.

Really, you think Adobe has changed from the very useful capture date to some less useful field. Why would they do that? Why do you think that? What happens when YOU try "By Date"?

When I import photos and select "By Date", I get exactly what I expect, which is folders by capture date.

Are you refering to the Sort option in Import as shown in the following screenshot?
