Lightroom Classic and Passport portable hard drive not working together anymore

Hello! I always upload my raw photos to a Passport portable hard drive and pull the photos into Lightroom directly from the drive and edit that way. Recently, when my drive is plugged in it slows down and/or crashes the entire program. It usually freezes and I have to close down and force quit the program and start it back up again about every 20 minutes.

Has something like this been happening to anyone else? I can't keep working like that as a professional wedding photographer and I don't have enough space to upload and entire raw album directly to my Macbook.

Sounds like the portable drive is having problems.

You could try, as an experiment, placing a small portion of your photos on the internal drive, work with just those, and see if the problem goes away.

I've tried this and it works fine but the hard drive also works perfectly fine when I'm accessing the files not on lightroom i.e. uploading to Dropbox (and lightroom not open)

the hard drive works a little slower when i have lightroom open and i try to access files in the hard drive through finder as well
