Lightroom Classic CC 7.3.1 Keeps Freezing & Crashing

Hello All,

Well, I really can’t understand what’s going on since I upgraded to High Sierra, prior to this time, that forced me to restore my machine.

Mine is:

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

macOS High Sierra 10.13.5

Storage: (currently) 469.65 GB available of 500.07 GB (Generally, not less than 300 GB free space is available in the old days)

Most of the files/backup are located on external drives to reduce the pressure on the machine

I bought my machine early 2014 and had to restore it only early 2017 and the process went very smoothly and quite fast. It resumed functioning very well till suddenly I started receiving issues after updating Sierra’s version; freezing and continuous crashing, though I had everything updated excluding High Sierra as I was hesitating to upgrade to it because of the negative reviews. I updated my Adobe Lightroom version to Classic CC 7.3.1 and Photoshop CC 2018 (19.1.4), assuming that it could be the reason behind the continuous crash of both of them. However, it went fine somehow couple of days, till suddenly the difficulties returned again. Neither additional softwares were launched nor there was a change in the sequence of the daily performance. In addition to that, external drives kept disconnecting suddenly, though Paragon was installed. Therefore, I decided to upgrade to High Sierra when the catastrophe began. I was unable to finish even 5 minutes of continues editing. Everything was slow, navigating between files, applications and evening surfing the net was a nightmare. To an extent that my machine started crashing and restarting several times a day; to less than 3 minutes between each incident. Whether while editing or exporting files.

It forced me to restore my machine and install High Sierra, presuming the latest version could be better, and shifted to iBoysoft from Paragon.

Currently:

Lightroom:

  • Keeps freezing though the GPU is disabled and I reseted the preferences as instructed by Lightroomqueen.com. I have no presets installed currently. I reported the crashing incidents, but no solution was found (this was the repeated answer I was receiving every time I submit a report).
  • Files modification dates appear as 01/01/1970 though the creation date is correct. I neither had a problem with my battery nor the machine was unplugged to power during the restoration process (an online finding). They suggested downloading convertors, but there must be a solution rather than that. It doesn’t make sense to continue converting - in the future - each new exported file every time.

I really don’t know what to do. I read many of reported issues. Shall I restore the machine again and install Sierra? I really have many pending projects and unpleased clients waiting for their photos to be delivered. I really need to find a solution as I couldn't benefit from my subscription this month because of the crashing. It is really so frustrating. I'm thinking of expanding my business by introducing new services that I'll indeed need to subscribe to more Adobe products. They'll be of no use if the problem is occurring with others such as Illustrator.

Any suggestion and guidelines?!

Hi aalmahroos -

Rather than go through the entire restore process again you might want to try to set up another test catalog to see if a new catalog has issues as well. Create a new catalog with one or two folders with a small number of images... if that works without any problems it might help you get through the work you have to deliver. Then you can either sort out the problem with the old catalog or move forward with the new catalog.

Perhaps not the most ideal solution but if you have to get work out to clients it might be the quickest.

Thank you for your suggestion cmgap.

I tried it and no change occurred. I wonder if you know anyone who tried restoring again their apple device, installed macOS Sierra instead of High Sierra and launched Lr 7.3.1, did the difficulties vanish?

I reverted back to Sierra due to conflicts with external drives. I'll update once I'm sure I won't need to get into older drives. I'm running Lr 7.3.1 without any issues.

Step 1 — since we are trying to help you, you have to help us as well. Do not type in such a small font. You want your words to be readable. Make our lives easier, type in the default font and font size for this forum.

Step 2 — Revert your Lightroom back to version 7.2. https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/using/install-previous-version.html

Thank you for your suggestions.

1. Font: when I start a discussion, it give me the option to select the font size as the default size appears on my screen is 14pt, which is bulky from my point view and never thought that reducing it will cause a reading challenge for others who are having different screen set-ups. Thank you for highlighting it, I'll ensure taking that into consideration when I start any new discussion.

2. Downgrading Lr to version 7.2 caused the below:

  • The catalog was created and the photos were edited via Lr 7.3.1, thus, I lost the profile selected for each one and converted them all back to Adobe Standard; i.e. I lost my edits as the chosen profile doesn't exit now and I have to go back through hundreds of photos again, not only to select a profile, but to reedit them to create the same effect created before the  which is really unrealistic and will consume weeks of editing.
  • Exporting photos: all the dates (created, modified and last opened) are the same and reflect today's date.

I would like to utilise the features introduced by Lr 7.3.1, so any suggestions on how to benefit from it? Do I need to restore my machine again? Shift back to Sierra from High Sierra? Any reliable suggestion will be highly appreciated.
