Lightroom Classic (current version) wont open/launch on Windows 11

It works fine for a few days and then won’t open.  Task Manager says it is running but I see nothing.  What gives?

I should mention my catalog is huge … don’t know if that has anything to do with it.

    Correct answer Rob_Cullen

I have just had a similar problem- Nothing starts visibly except for intense hard-drive activity. No error messages. Repeat clicking of the LrC start icon results in multiple listings of LrC in Task Manager.

For some reason (went for a cuppa?) I let it continue with its disk activity thinking it might be a scheduled backup and eventually after about 10-15minutes it finally opened my catalog.

Since then the catalog has been opening and closing as normal, or even faster to open.

So I don’t have any answers and cannot explain what happened. These glitches are sent to try us!

New development! I do have some files on a Synology NAS and I noticed that it was furiously clicking away when it should be silent. I then wondered if Lightroom was accessing that for some reason (it should not be). So I shut down the NAS and then closed LR via Task Manager as it was running in the background. I then restarted it and it WORKED!

So if you’re having this issue and you have a NAS or external drives, try disconnecting them and see if that helps?

2 days later, I’m back again. LRc stalled and quit responding, so I closed it. No error messages. After trying to restart it the problem is back, it’s opening only in the background, again no error messages. Since I just went through this 2 days ago, I already know that restarting, resetting preferences etc. does not work. It very frustrating and now I have an actual job I need to get working on. So as suggested here, I will wait and see if it ultimately opens.

LRC 15.4.1 (Windows 11) Lightroom will not open but runs in background. I'm going to leave my comments in case it helps to diagnose for anybody. I used Task Manager to end process, but no help there. I repeatedly restarted the program and also restarted my PC. No matter what I did Lightroom would always open up in the background. While trying to diagnose I saw some advice saying to reset preferences, which I did. That did not work. Then I saw advice that said to try and open up Lightroom from a backup catalog. I did have a fairly recent backup catalog so I tried that and it worked. So I came to the conclusion that my catalog was probably corrupted. So, I deleted my current catalog and replaced it with my backup and at the time being all is good. I did lose a full day of work, which was a bummer. I have seen some others posting here and it sounds like if you let Lightroom run all night, the problem might resolve itself. I did not try that, but the comments below make me wonder.

An additional note to mention is something that happened right before this event. I've been using a Windows Voice Access app for dictation, without realizing that my voice might activate something in LRC. When I said the term “OK” all of a sudden Lightroom started trying to search my photos for people/faces. Evidently when you are in the library tab and you hit the letter “O” that starts some sort of search for faces. Once I figured out how to turn that off (G) all seemed to be good.  Now that I see others with the same issue of LRC not opening (but  then starting after leaving it running all night) I wonder if Lightroom was stalled because it was trying to search my entire catalog for people somehow? (even though I stopped that process) No way to know, but it was a strange coincidence.

So for now, I’m up and running.

I've found that its very easy to corrupt the catalogue if you try to relaunch lightroom quickly after closing it, I force myself to give it a good 15-20 secs before relaunching it after closing. Easy to do especially when your trying to troubleshoot something.

@Gixxxa75  FYI There exists a Script that can close and automatically restart Lightroom-Classic.

In my experience- Without checking ‘Integrity’ and ‘Optimize’ and skipping ‘Backup’- my catalog 62,000 images reopens in 20 seconds with the script. Written in the days of Lr v2 it still works with LrC.

ZIP file with the script and documentation attached-

    Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.4.1, Photoshop 27.8, ACR 18.4, Lightroom 9.4, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.3 .

A number of people have reported that Lightroom Classic doesn’t open normally, and if you wait for a few hours (one person needed 12 hours) that it starts up and works fine and then opens normally after that.

Please quote the exact complete word-for-word error messages. We need to know both the error message when it  crashes and the error message from Creative Cloud when you try to uninstall.

i went to creative cloud but there is no option to uninstall/reinstall.

The uninstall option appears when you click on Apps on the left

Can’t open the program. I get sorry an error occurred.  I sent a response to Adobe but no answer on their part.  i went to creative cloud but there is no option to uninstall/reinstall.

I am on a Windows 11 machine, but when I go in uninstall in Windows settings, it just brings me to creative cloud which tells me my system is incompatible.

Are you talking about Lightroom (Lr icon) or Lightroom Classic (LrC icon)?

If LrC, many people have found that letting it run for a long time causes LrC to eventually launch (one person needed 12 hours).

If Lr, you are in the wrong forum, you need to post in the Lightroom (Ecosystem) forum.

Lightroom for MAC does not launch. Adobe creative cloud gives me a message saying there was an issue with loading and cannot show content. I have reset preferences and have uninstalled and installed Lightroom but it still will not launch
