Question

Lightroom Classic deleted files from Mac (OSX)

Hi All,

Not sure if anyone has experienced this issue before, but thought I would post it here anyway. Last night I was uploading video files to my agency via WeTransfer (1.6GB).

  • I opened Lightroom Classic to do metadata tagging, and had to sync the folders with Lightroom first
  • Some files were in Folder B and some were in Folder A
  • I then realised that the files needed to be in the same folder, so moved the files from Folder B to Folder A where the 2 other files were.
  • I then did the metatdata tagging, exported the tags to a .csv file  and closed lightroom (completely).
  • I opened WeTransfer and started the upload, which I let run while I was asleep (my Internet connection wasn't great at the time)
  • When I woke up in the morning, the WeTransfer hadn't finished and the files (barring one) that I had copied from Folder B to Folder A were completely gone (not even in my Trash).  They weren't in Folder A of Folder B, or the Trash.
  • When I opened Lightroom, the folders that I had synced were unsynced, showing the files as they were before I synced the first time
  • I say they unysnced, because usually if a file is missing, Lightroom will still show the preview/thumbnail and indicate that the file is missing
  • Note: I had just updated Lightroom about 1-2 hours before doing all of the above.

Any ideas how this could have happened? I'm only assuming that it was Lightroom, because I don't think WeTransfer (web) is able to delete files from the source folder, and the fact that the folders in Lightroom weren't as I had left them after syncing.

Thanks,

Brandon

You said you closed Lightroom completely, so obviously Lightroom did not delete those files. I have no idea what happened, but Lightroom did not do it (I agree that I do not think WeTransfer did it either).

Yeah I initially thought it must have been a Mac OS issue, but what I thought was strange was that, even though Lightroom was completely closed, when I opened it again the folder that had the missing files wasn't showing the previews/thumbnails for the missing files (see screenshots). Instead the folder was showing only the files before I had synced with the new files (before closing Lightroom). Usually I would have to physically sync the folder in Lightroom for any changes in the file previews/thumbnails to happen. Also, file 3 (one of the new files I copied and synced) was still in the folder but not in the folder previews in LR.

I've attached screenshots here ... obviously I can't show a screenshot of the folder synced before I closed Lightroom, because it's changed. Initially I had videos 1 & 2 synced with LR. Then copied videos 3-8 to the folder and synced LR before closing LR. Videos 4-8 disappeared and when opening LR again, the synced folder only showed videos 1 & 2, which is how the folder was synced before I synced it with videos 3-8.

It would be good to know how the folder in LR reverted to its last sync state, with LR being closed (and without me doing it.. also if I had synced LR, then file 3 would be there right)? Is it possible that there was a catalog issue after my update perhaps (since the folder in LR is showing as it was before I updated LR)? I know it's typically only possible to delete files from LR by doing it yourself. I've also read online that sometimes deleting files from LR can skip the trash, which is another reason I thought a bug must have happened somewhere between be syncing the folder and updating LR.

It's almost like files 3-8 were deleted, then LR opened and the folder synced, then LR closed and file 3 put back in the folder... which seems like a stretch for me to do in my sleep 😉

It is even more a stretch for a closed Lightroom to do that during your sleep. The most likely explanation seems to me that Lightroom opened an earlier version of your catalog.

Lightroom Classic does not delete your files, unless you the human user specifically told LrC to perform a delete. So the problem lies elsewhere.
