Question

LightRoom Classic doesn't like the SUBST command

My system is Windows 11 with all the latest released updates. No beta code.

I had an interesting issue with LRc today. I could do everything except export to a file (e.g. jpg).  The error was To cut a long discussion short, the answer was that it doesn't like my use of the SUBST command to shorten and manage different directories.

The actual error was

"The file could not be written (1)" followed by the name of the RAW file (even though I was trying to write a JPG).

Example: If I have the command: SUBST Y: c:\user\alans\synologydrive\pics

Y:\Fuji\writablefolder is no good - I get an error in LR

but C:\user\alans\synologydrive\pics\fuji\wrtablefolder works just fine.

Photoshop doesn't have this problem.

I think this is a bug. Every other app I have works fine using the Y: drive.

Cheers

Alan

This is not a surprise withwhat I know about Windows filesystems. The use of drive letters in general is archaic but beyond that, shell commands for path translation aren't going to work well with a database. There is still a lot of tension between DOS paths and UNC paths. I'm betting that Adobe marks this technique as unsupported.

You may be right. I'm going to try NTFS junctions next to see if I can get the same drive letters on two machines. But now I know what the "issue" is, I can work around it (I don't need the same drive letters for Lightroom, it was just convenient).

In recent years, some have reported that LR doesn't play nicely with SUBST:

Many years ago, some would work around LR's prohibition against putting catalogs on network drives by using SUBST, but that stopped working at some point. I wonder if that's related to why SUBST doesn't work for other locations storing photos (just a speculation).

Many years ago used NTFS junctions briefly with LR and didn't encounter any issues.  I can't remember why I did that though 😆

but C:\user\alans\synologydrive\pics\fuji\wrtablefolder works just fine.

So, an inquiry based on your use of a NAS. Is your catalog on the NAS? or as supported by Adobe, on a hard drive connected to your computer?

P.S. while Adobe does support storing the photos on a NAS or other network share including the Cloud, many find that eventually that fails. Although your issue is not the issue those other members see. Typically LrC comes back and states the photos are missing.

The files are actually on my C: drive. It's just that those files are synched with my NAS when I have a network connection.

Just curious. Why is this NOT a bug?

I am using symbolic links with LrC without any problems.
