i always save my photos directly to my portable hard drive in a new catalog in lightroom. i recently had a client that wanted to proof photos so i went to adobe.com and learned how to sync to the cloud and send clients proofs. however now i can not open my original catalogs straight from my portable hard drive. any tips? i have all photos and i have backed up but nothing will open in lightroom classic.

"...can not open my original catalogs..." Might give a clue that you use multiple catalogs, yes?

Know that you can only sync ONE catalog to the Adobe Cloud. You can swap to another Catalog but with complications when all Cloud photos want to download again.

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.1.1, Photoshop 27.3.1, ACR 18.1.1, Lightroom 9.0, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.2 .

Also, since you're using a Mac, best you check that LrC has 'Full Disk Access' as described in below linked thread https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/quick-tips-how-to-give-full-disk-access-to-lightroom-classic-on-macos/td-p/12913413
