Question

Lightroom Classic no longer usable due to long (long) pauses

I haven’t been using LrC recently (the last 6 months or so) during which I’ve seen several updates.  Today I needed to process several hundred CR2 images (5760x3840) and find that performance has gone through the basement.  Switching between images now takes anywhere between 2 and 15 seconds with no rhyme or reason for the long delays.  Even skipping back one image, which is usually instantaneous, sometimes takes 5-6 seconds.

Here’s my hardware:

  • Ryzen 9 7940HS (8 core 16 thread) with Radeon 780M
  • 64GB memory
  • LR catalog, previews, and raw cache are on a local SSD

I have tried all settings of GPU acceleration (off, on, auto, custom) with no discernible effect.  I tried increasing the raw cache size to 50gb, but LR doesn’t seem to be using it.  After scrolling through about 200 raw images, total cache usage is only 28MB, far below the actual size of the raw files (11GB)

I’ve also optimized the catalog, purged the raw cache and regenerated standard previews.  That last step helped somewhat but it’s still slow (sometimes painfully).

Is this just the current state of LrC, that it cannot run well on my hardware any more?

When you are trying to switch between images, are you talking about doing this in the Develop Module or in the Library Module?

Please make sure that Synchronize with the cloud is off (actually check to make sure it is off, do not say I never use it). Same for face detection, make sure it is off. Same for the new culling feature, make sure it is off.

If your catalog file is in a folder synced with OneDrive, turn off OneDrive or move the catalog to somewhere else that is not synced with OneDrive.

    Hi @Jim Garrison

Sorry to hear you're experiencing performance issues in Lightroom Classic. As a starting point, I'd recommend trying the optimization steps outlined here: https://adobe.ly/3SKw9Q1

To better understand your setup, could you also share the following?

    • System Info (Help > System Info > Copy and paste the full report here)

    • Confirm you're running the latest version of Lightroom Classic (Help > Updates)

    • Whether the slowdown occurs during specific actions (scrolling, editing, switching images, importing, exporting, etc.)

    • Are your photos and catalog stored on a local drive, external drive, or network drive?

    • Have you tried testing with a new, empty catalog to see if the issue persists?

    • Under Catalog Settings > File Handling, what preview settings are you using?

If possible, please also share a screen recording demonstrating the lag or pauses. That will help us better understand the behavior and narrow down the cause.
