Lightroom classic not responding

I have just spent over two hours trying to view & edit some pictures in LrC but keep getting the message "Lightroom not responding" & have to close it down & try again. About 30+ times so far. First I couldn't even get it to show the folder I wanted then next time I got as far as viewing the folder but was unable to select a picture before it stopped responding, next I got the piocture but couldn't move in to Develop etc, etc.

This is not the first time this has happened, which is why I haven't edited anything  since before Christmas as it is so annoying. Especially after having the issue with photoshop that wouldn't recognise RAW files.

How can Adobe justify increasing their prices when their product fails to do what it is meant to do.

On top of all that I have just heard that the prices are rising & that the most affordable package is being withdrawn. Something I only found out by accident as I had no communication from Adobe to inform me of this. Apparently it was in some sort of Blog somewhere. Forgive me for being ignorant but I wouldn't even know where to find such a blog even if I didn't have better things to do than keep checking up on Adobe's continually changing T&Cs. Even the tax man sends me a reminder when he wants my money, he doesn't just post it somewhere without telling me & hope that I will find it.

As somebody who only moved to the subscription version in June 2024, I can only say that it was the biggest mistake I have ever made.

For years I have used LR 5 Combined with Elements 11 & have never had any problems with either not working. Sure, the masking in the modern versions is "O.K." but I still find that you still end up spending time adding or subtracting areas with a brush just as in the "lesser" versions unless the background is clean or out of focus. The old way may be slow but not as slow as spending hours just trying to get into the software before editing starts.

I only took the plunge because a course I am planning on doing requires a current version of Lrc or photoshop. Now depite having  the required software I won't be able to do the course as said software is not up to the job. If it doesn't work on my brand new up to date PC then I don't hold out any hope of it working on my five year old laptop.

In a first step you should  try to reset the Lightroom preferences.

https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/

It's recommended to backup your preferences before you reset the preferences to the default settings:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/preference-file-and-other-file-locations.html

It's also possible that there's an issue with your catalog. Hold the Ctrl-Key while starting LrC. This opens a catalog selection dialog.

First select the appropriate recent catalog and let it check it – note the checkmark "Test integrity of this catalog" to check its integrity. If that doesn't help, try to create a new one and see if this catalog works. If yes, you could then try to import your current catalog into the new one.

Another point can be a problem with the preview cache.

Goto the folder that contains your Lightroom catalog in Finder. The default location is in the Pictures/Lightroom folder under your user folder. Search the [Catalog-name] Previews.lrdata file and drag it to the trash. Then restart Lightroom.

After you delete the previews, your folders might reopen more slowly while previews are being rebuilt.

If this doesn't help please check if your system is up-to-date. Do you have installed all recent updates and patches for the operating system and the device drivers, especially the graphic driver? If you have a NVidia graphic card installed, make sure that you are using the recent Studio version of the driver, not the Game Ready version.

Please provide also a copy of your 'System Info'. This can be get from the LrC Help > System Info menu item. There's a copy button in the System Info dialog. Press this button and paste the info into your next forum post.

My System: Intel i7-8700K - 64GB RAM - NVidia Geforce RTX 3060 - Windows 11 Pro 25H2 -- LR-Classic 15 - Photoshop 27 - Nik Collection 8 - PureRAW 6 - Topaz Photo AI
