Lightroom Classic not syncing to desktop

Question

I am new to Lightroom Classic, but I've had the cloud version for a while. When I make edits on Lightroom Classic, the edits are synced to my cloud Lightroom. However, when I go into my desktop folders where those images are stored locally, they are in the original format. I was under the impression that lightroom classic would sync everything. Am I missing something? Do I need to re-download/export them to my desktop now that I have edited them?

Lightroom Classic keeps all images in their original format, it never changes the image. Edits are stored as a kind of 'to do list' in the catalog. When you want to use an image with its edits for something, then you export a copy with those edits.
