Lightroom Classic on Mac hangs when moving files from one volume to another

Lightroom Classic 14.0.1 on Mac hangs for long periods of time when I move a lot of photos from one directory to another.

Sampling the process seems to suggest that the program is frantically refreshing its views and hanging the UI while it’s doing so. These hangs would last for many minutes and seem to get progressively worse, basically halting the data transfer.

One workaround I have found is to minimize the app window while the files are being transferred. Once the files are moved, restore the app window.

Do you have any of the following occurring:

  • Face Recognition active (not paused) and running
  • Address Lookup active and running
  • Sync to the Cloud

Yes to all.

Either pause that or wait untill they are finished before moving images. Various sync can eat up LrC performance. In fact Adobe may have very much fouled up the sync to the cloud from LrC.

Hey @drahardja

Thank you for reaching out! Could you share a bit more about the issue? For example, how many photos are you trying to move? Are you moving them within Lightroom Classic? Also, are the files stored on an external hard drive, NAS, or internally?

Additionally, could you send your system info? You can find this by going to Help > System Info, copying the details, and pasting them into a text file to attach here. This information will help us investigate further!

I’m moving about 10,000 photos.

Yes, I’m moving them within LRC.

The files are stored on two different NASes; I’m moving them from one NAS to another.

I’ve worked around the issue by manually copying the files across the NAS, then using the Update Folder Location… menu option on the folder that I moved to point it to the new NAS. It still causes a very long hang to occur, but it resolves afterward.
