Lightroom Classic on Mac importing all photos from iPhone, duplicates again and again

I was trying to import my 1500 new photos to Lightroom Classic from my iPhone 13. Instead, it imported 14,698 photos that had already been imported, up to  the year 2021, and did not import the most recent photos from the last couple of months. I do have "Don't Import Suspected Duplicates" checked. I again selected "Import" to see if I can get my most recent photos imported, now it has 16,500 set to import. It is not showing a preview of the photos, so I can't de-select all and just select the ones I want to import, since I don't know the image numbers. 

Also - sorting by Capture Time is not working. How did photos captured in 2020, 2021 & 2022 get mixed in with photos from April and May of 2023?
