Lightroom Classic opens and exports wrong images: possible file suffix issue?

Description of the Issue:

When I select an image in the Library module and switch to the Develop module to edit it, Lightroom sometimes opens the wrong image for editing. This same issue occurs during export: the wrong image is exported.

Troubleshooting:

After troubleshooting with a support agent over chat and Bomgar, we identified that the issue seems to be related to file suffixes. For example, an image named _NL39617.ARW in the Library module opens the wrong image _NL39617-2.ARW in the Develop module. It appears that Lightroom is not properly cataloging images with identical names that have different suffixes, or those without a suffix.

Additional Observations:

I've attached screenshots that illustrate the problem. One image shows a subset of images in the Library, and the other shows the export results. Notice that the singer in the exported image is from a different set, and the bassist appears alone in the Library module. These mismatched images also show up incorrectly in the Develop module.

Current Situation:

Unfortunately, my computer crashed, and I lost connection with the support agent before the issue was resolved.

I’m hoping someone can assist me further and report this bug to Adobe. This is a significant issue for me. I have a catalog of 16,000 images that I spent two days reviewing, and 80 image sequence exports are now incorrect due to this problem. I’m unable to edit several key images because of this bug.

System Information:

  • Lightroom Classic 13.5
  • Windows 10

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are these images that get mixed in in the same folder on your drive? I would suspect catalog corruption. The way to check this is to do a check catalog integrity. Do this by quitting lightroom and opening it again while holding the option key. You should get a dialog where you can select your catalog file and you can indicate that you want its integrity checked. If it finds issues, it will attempt to repair. Lightroom certainly can deal with file suffixes like in your example just fine in my experience so something else is wrong here.

Yes, the images are all in the same folder. I've checked catalog integrity several times, tested it again, it does nothing.

First thing I would try is to rebuild the previews used by the Library Module. In the Library Module, click on "All Photographs", select all photos, then Library->Previews->Build 1:1 Previews or Library->Previews->Build Standard-Size Previews. (This may take a few hours, depending on the speed of your computer. If it is a laptop computer, do this in batches)

I tested by building previews for three images. Two of the images have wrong destination files, for example _NL39615.ARW in Library ends up showing _NL39615-2.ARW in Develop. These two images indeed now show the thumbnail to the correct image, but the file name in Metadata ribbon still points to _NL39615.ARW. Third image without any similar filename with a suffix renders correctly.

So while this helped point to the "correct" file, the file reference is still wrong. And now the original _NL39615.ARW is nowhere to be seen, and can't be edited - it's like it has disappeared entirely.
